What is Stuttering?

Stuttering is a speech disorder, that is characterised by repetitions, prolongations (liiiikkkee this) and stoppages (no sound) of various sounds and syllables. stuttering can also be referred to as stammering.

Facts on Stuttering

1. Stuttering usually begins in childhood between the ages of 2 and 5 years.

2. Stuttering can begin gradually or suddenly.

3. It's estimated that about 1% of the world stutters.

4. Stuttering varies over time, sometimes people will have periods in which stuttering appears to go away, only to have it return.

5. People who stutter often try to avoid stuttering.

Join the SLTA Tutoring Team as we show our support to persons with Down syndrome and their loved ones by creating
awareness about and communicating facts about the condition.

What is Down syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder arising at conception. There is an extra number 21 chromosome (Trisomy 21) which causes delays in physical and intellectual development.

Facts about Down syndrome

1. The cause of Down syndrome is not related to age, race, religion or socio-economic situations.
2. One in 1 000 babies born in developed countries and 1 in 650 babies born in developing countries is affected by Down syndrome.
3. 80 percent of children affected by Down syndrome are born from mothers under the age of 35, although women over the age of 35 are at a higher risk of having a child with Down syndrome.
3. Although Down syndrome cannot be cured, there is a variety of medical care to treat problems associated with the disease.
4. Children with Down syndrome can be included in normal schools with regular academic procedures.
5. Persons with Down syndrome can live up to the age of 50 to 55.
