The Grade 6 class experiment for testing foods for starch is a classic, hands-on science activity. We use iodine solution as an indicator because iodine reacts with starch to produce a dramatic color change. What Happens in the Experiment. • If a food contains starch, adding a few drops of iodine turns it blue-black (or dark purple-black). • If there is no starch, the iodine stays its original color — usually yellowish-brown, orange-brown, or amber. This is a simple chemical test that’s safe when supervised, fun, and helps kids learn about carbohydrates in food.
