Did you know play-based approaches help children learn to read with understanding and calculate with confidence? ๐Ÿงฎ๐Ÿ“š

Research from UNICEF South Africa and The LEGO Foundation confirms that learning through play in the foundation phase builds childrenโ€™s communication, numeracy, problem-solving and social skills more effectively than rote instruction alone.*

At Funda Wande, play is intentionally built into how we design our learning materials and how we train and support teachers.

This International Day of Play, we are sharing five simple ways to use Funda Wande resources alongside everyday games to keep learning active, meaningful and fun. Swipe through ๐Ÿ‘‰

Why do so many girls grow up believing maths is not for them?

Some of the most brilliant women in mathematics and education in South Africa came together for International Women in Mathematics Day and unpacked the gaps that still exist in how girls experience mathematics from the earliest grades.

Dr. Shemunyenge Hamukwaya, Mathematics Educator and Postdoctoral Fellow at Wits - University of the Witwatersrand, put it plainly: every girl can do maths, and we need to start telling them that. The perception has held on long enough, and this panel discussion is part of changing it.

The full conversation will be live on our website soon, stay tuned. ๐ŸŽฅ

Following International Women in Mathematics Day on 12 May, Funda Wande recently hosted a panel discussion exploring a question that sits at the heart of foundational education: Why are girls sometimes left behind when it comes to mathematics? ๐Ÿ”ข

Eight women working across education, research, and classroom practice came together to examine how early numeracy experiences shape mathematical confidence, and what it takes to build learning environments where all children, especially girls, feel they belong in maths. The conversation covered everything from teaching practices, system change, and the link between Foundation Phase numeracy and long-term STEM pathways.

We want to hear from you: Why do you think girls are sometimes left behind in mathematics, and what needs to change? Drop your thoughts in the comments. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

This Global Day of Parents, we recognise that a child's learning journey begins long before they set foot in a classroom. ๐Ÿ“–

Research shows that a strong home literacy environment is one of the best predictors of future academic success, and that means the adults in a child's life play a powerful role in defining their relationship with reading and learning from the very start.

What is one thing you do, or encourage others to do, to foster a love of reading at home? Share your thoughts in the comments. ๐Ÿ

Today weโ€™re bringing together educators, researchers, policymakers and partners to explore multilingual teaching and learning.

Through evidence, dialogue and shared experiences, weโ€™re asking an important question:
How do we better support teachers and learners in multilingual classrooms?

Weโ€™re looking forward to a day of learning, collaboration and practical insights that can strengthen teaching and improve learning outcomes.

This Africa Day, weโ€™re reminded that some of the most powerful voices in Africa are sitting in our classrooms, full of pride, talent, hope, and joy.

Today, we celebrate the heart of Africa, our cultures, and the voices that will shape the future. Happy Africa Day.

Language is at the heart of how children learn, participate and build confidence in the classroom
Across multilingual classrooms, teachers are doing powerful work every day, helping learners make meaning and grow in literacy and mathematics.

But improving learning outcomes means strengthening how we support teachers too, especially through professional development that is practical, responsive and grounded in real classroom contexts.

On 29 May, weโ€™re bringing together educators, researchers and stakeholders to explore shared insights, challenges and opportunities for strengthening multilingual teaching and learning in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases.

Africa Day is a celebration of our stories, told in our own voices. ๐ŸŒ

When learning materials speak the language of the home, be it isiXhosa, isiZulu, or Sepedi, the whole family can get involved. Familiar language turns homework into an opportunity for connection, allowing parents to engage directly with the curriculum.

We believe in honouring heritage through education. Because when children understand what they read, they can change the world. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ
