South Africa's premier Deaf and hearing visual theatre company

Today is Assitej International's TAKE A CHILD TO THE THEATRE DAY. However, today amidst the pandemic we celebrate finding ways to take Theatre to the Child.

FTH:K, along with Jayne Batzofin, thought that our contribution would come in making "What Goes UP..." and "Measure UP" accessible to those children who do have access to data and can watch from their homes. We know this solution does not reach everyone, especially many Deaf children in our country without access to internet.

We make these resources free and available and we ask, that if you are able to make a small donation to the Theatre Benevolent Fund, a South African charitable fund, voluntarily administered to people within the industry, receiving no support from government or any of the corporates, then please do so. http://tbfsa.co.za/support-us/

In light of the recent events in South Africa with COVID-19, and with the fact that the 20th March is "Take a Child to Theatre" day, both FTH:K and Jayne Batzofin have decided to make 'What Goes UP...' available for public viewing on YouTube (to those that do have access to the internet and data usage).

In this way children all over the world (with access to the internet) that are staying at home can partake in seeing theatre.

💙💙💙

While the show was created for Deaf children in South African Sign Language (SASL), there is an English voice over for those that don't understand SASL.

Yesterday we spent the final day of the 'Measure UP' KwaZulu-Natal Schools' Tour at Durban School for the Hearing Impaired. Sadly not all the children could be present due to broken down school buses. However the children that were there thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They squealed with delight throughout the show, and were totally mesmerised by the visual world performed in front of them.

Thank you to our amazing team: Bo Tasker, Thalia Laric and Jayne Batzofin for working so hard to bring this magical world of 'Measure UP' to life for all the Deaf schools in KZN.

Thank you also must go to our amazing funder the National Lotteries Commission for making this National Schools' Tour in KZN a reality.

On Friday we spent the morning at the wonderful Kwavulindlebe School for the Deaf. A small school with the biggest heart for their learners. Thank you to Nomathemba Daphney Ndlovu for always taking such care of us when we visit.

We spent the last two days at Kwa-Thintwa School for the Deaf. After four shows and four workshops our bodies may be a little tired but our hearts are most certainly bursting with joy from so many little signing hands and bright smiles.

HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We are thrilled to start off our New Year with a Schools' Tour of Measure UP in KwaZulu-Natal. After such a successful Tour in Gauteng in 2018, we can't wait to bring the same magic to all the wonderful Foundation Phase children in KZN.
Here is to starting off a year of magic with them all.

Thank you to our amazing funder, the National Lotteries Commission. Without your support this tour would not be able to reach the children it was intended for.

Yvette Hardie’s message for the World Day of Theatre for children and young people | ASSITEJ International 20/03/2019

"Children need to be able to enjoy moments in community where they are reminded of what we share. They need spaces in which to explore new ways of thinking that challenge divisive narratives, in which they feel empathy for those most unlike themselves. They need concrete experiences of communion in community to remind them of the joy and beauty that the world has to offer."

In honour of the World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People, president of ASSITEJ International Yvette Hardie writes an inspiring message.

After months of preparation, we can't believe the cast returns from Tokyo after their incredible time at the Tya Festival Japan 2019 Tyaインクルーシブアーツフェスティバル2019. The audiences were so warm and receptive, both adults and children were mesmerised.

A huge thanks goes to the Festival team and all the amazing volunteers both in front and behind the scenes who made it the success it was. May this Festival go from strength to strength, and may there be even more inclusive festivals in the future both there and globally.
