Do not cheat in chess, as in life. What are your thoughts on the verdict?
๐จ HISTORIC CHESS VERDICT BY FIDE ๐จ
In a landmark decision that will shape the future of competitive chess, the FIDE Ethics & Disciplinary Commission (EDC) has delivered its final ruling in the case of Grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko, and his final appeal has also been rejected by FIDE.
During the 2024 Spanish Team Championship, GM Kirill Shevchenko was observed leaving the board repeatedly during his games, raising suspicion.
Subsequent investigation revealed:
A hidden mobile phone concealed inside a toilet cubicle
A handwritten note, later confirmed to match Shevchenkoโs handwriting
Shevchenko admitted to hiding the phone and accessing Lichess, though he denied using it to influence his games
โ๏ธ FIDEโs Final Sanctions:
โ Grandmaster title revoked, first time in chess history
โ 3-year worldwide ban from all FIDE-rated events
โก๏ธ 1 year of the ban is suspended, meaning 2 years effective
๐ซ Final appeal declined โ ruling is now definitive
Dana Reizniece, Deputy President of FIDE, stated:
> โEnsuring fair play is non-negotiable, it is essential to the credibility and future of our sport.โ
This is the first-ever case where a Grandmaster title has been stripped due to cheating. The decision sends a powerful message:
No title is above the rules
Fair play is the foundation of chess
Cheating threatens the credibility of the entire sport
While some may debate whether revoking a title earned over years is too severe, others argue that intentional deception with electronic assistance crosses a red line.
๐ฌ Your thoughts?
Was this punishment: โ๏ธ Necessary and justified?
โ Too harsh?
โ๏ธ Or the only way to protect chess integrity?

The December World Chess Rankings have been released. Magnus Carlsen maintains his top position, a reign that has endured since 2011. Hikaru Nakamura is attempting to narrow the gap, but a 30-point rating difference is significant at the highest level.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov is gradually ascending the ranks following a challenging FIDE World Cup. Keymer and Erigaisi, meanwhile, are among the top five.
Carlsen among other top players will be visiting South Africa. So if you are in Cape Town, go to Waterfront on the 4th as you might meet them.

One of my favourite tournaments in the Chess calendar!
Who will take it?
FIDE announces the list of players for the 2025 World Rapid and Blitz: A stellar lineup in ๐ถ๐ฆ Doha
World Champion ๐ฎ๐ณ Gukesh D and ๐ณ๐ด Magnus Carlsen join over 360 players who have confirmed their participation in the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship in Doha.
The event, which will take place from December 25 to 30, brings together a field featuring multiple world champions, most of the sportโs highest-rated competitors, and rising stars.
A total of 233 players registered for the Blitz Open and 230 for the Rapid. After missing out on the crown in the Rapid and sharing gold in the Blitz in the previous edition in New York, Magnus Carlsen โ who this year became a father โ returns to the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz. He will try to unseat the 2024 World Rapid champion, Volodar Murzin, who has had strong tournament performances throughout the year.
World Champion Gukesh D has also confirmed his attendance. His participation is expected to draw a lot of interest from the public. In particular, his superb result in Zagreb earlier this year indicates he will be one of the favorites in Rapid.
Many seasoned elite players such as 2024 World Blitz co-champion Ian Nepomniachtchi, ๐บ๐ธ Fabiano Caruana, ๐ณ๐ฑ Anish Giri, ๐บ๐ธ Wesley So, and ๐บ๐ธ Levon Aronian have also confirmed their participation. Challenging them will be a new generation of contenders seeking to disrupt established hierarchies: ๐ฉ๐ช Vincent Keymer, ๐ฎ๐ณ Arjun Erigaisi, ๐บ๐ฟ Nodirbek Abdusattorov, ๐ฎ๐ณ Praggnanandhaa R, ๐น๐ท Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, and ๐น๐ท Ediz Gรผrel to name just a few.
