๐€๐›๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ: This is a conversation between Africans and Palestinians that explores the intertwined histories of genocide, apartheid and colonialism across Africa, with particular attention to the direct resonances of Gaza with present-day Sudan, Western Sahara and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and past liberation struggles in Namibia, Kenya, Algeria, and beyond. We argue that Palestine is not peripheral to Africaโ€™s struggleโ€” but woven into its historical and ongoing pursuit of justice and liberation. The colonial violence experienced by African nations throughout history and the genocide in Palestine are not isolated phenomena but manifestations of an interconnected legacy of imperialism.

Eight years after the 2018 publication of the Report on the Restitution of African Cultural Heritage - commissioned by French President Macron and authored by Senegalese academic Felwine Sarr and French art historian Bรฉnรฉdicte Savoy - only few works have been returned. Various types of obstacles, particularly legal and technical ones, are regularly cited to explain this situation. It is important to also examine the structural and psychological drivers behind this. For while, for African countries, recovering their looted works amounts to reclaiming a part of their heritage and memory, it appears that for European countries, the act of restitution amounts to confronting their colonial past and rewriting the historical narrative surrounding it to acknowledge its true nature: a crime against humanity.
