“These phones and apps are so addictive that the designers won’t let their own kids near them. That’s all you need to know. When you combine these things with our current administration, that says ‘‘commodify, commodify, commodify,’ instead of ‘communicate, connect, share’—of course there’s a loneliness epidemic, especially among men. But I have the answer. I tell my son all the time: go find some girlfriends. I don’t mean girls that you’re looking to conquer. I don’t mean girls you’re looking to date. Just find girls to be your friend: talk about your life, talk about your feelings. Women have these friendships where we talk about the minutiae of the day. And men don’t have that. I’m generalizing, of course; another thing I teach my son is that there is no ‘never,’ and there is no ‘always.’ But look no further than the animal kingdom. Males just drop their seed and go conquer something else. But females grow people in ourselves; we understand deeply that life is only able to happen because of connection to others.”
