Le reporting permet aux villes de démontrer l’impact de leurs actions en faveur du climat, d’évaluer les progrès par rapport à leurs engagements, d’identifier les possibilités d’amélioration et de mettre en avant leur leadership au niveau régional et mondial.

Ce webinaire dédié au reporting guidera les villes africaines tout au long du cycle de reporting CDP-ICLEI Track 2026, en leur apportant un soutien pratique pour aider les gouvernements locaux à produire des rapports climatiques de haute qualité.

🤝🌍 City-to-city exchange: Ghanaian municipalities convene for urban adaptation implementation

Weeks after devastating floods claimed lives across Greater Accra, eight municipalities across Ghana have come together with a shared commitment to accelerate local climate action before the next disaster strikes.

Convened by the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa ( ) and hosted by Tema Metropolitan Assembly, the Urban Adaptation Implementation Accelerator Exchange has brought together Mayors and technical teams from Sekondi-Takoradi, Cape Coast, Tema, Keta, Akatsi North, Nanumba South, Kumbungu and Mion.

While each CoM SSA signatory municipality has developed both a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment and a Local Adaptation Plan, the focus of this exchange has been on the next critical step: transforming that planning into .

Over two days, participants shared implementation successes such as building solar-powered boreholes and developing comprehensive wastewater and stormwater plans, and they developed project concepts that can be advanced through a combination of municipal resources and external financing.

The session also reinforced the vital role of local political leadership in communicating climate risks and driving action through a dedicated Mayors’ Political dialogue and panel discussion.

Climate adaptation cannot wait, and while local governments are on the front lines of responding to climate impacts, lasting will depend on strong collaboration among citizens, all levels of government, and development partners.

Supported by Strengthening Investments in Gender-Responsive Climate Adaptation (SIGRA), the Environmental Protection Authority, Ghana (EPA) and the C40 Cities Finance Facility (C40 CFF), the exchange marks an important step towards turning local climate ambition into implementation.

From climate planning to implementation: Nouakchott launches the next chapter of its CoM SSA journey 🚀🌍

For years, the Nouakchott Region has been translating ambition into tangible action through its partnership with the . From expanding sustainable energy access to advancing nature-based solutions, the region has built a strong foundation for climate resilience. Now, with the launch of the fourth phase of CoM SSA, that partnership is entering an ambitious new phase focused on scaling impact and delivering lasting benefits for communities.

In July, the fourth phase of CoM SSA was officially launched in Mauritania, reinforcing the long-term commitment to strengthening Nouakchott's climate .

🌇 The launch event brought together representatives from the Nouakchott Region, the Embassy of Spain and the AECID reinforcing a strong partnership for local climate action.

Funded by the European Commission and co-funded by AECID, the programme will support cities in designing and implementing policies that strengthen climate resilience, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote the transition to sustainable energy.

In Mauritania, this new phase builds on the significant achievements of CoM SSA’s third phase, which supported the implementation of the Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan ( ) in the Nouakchott Region. Some of these achievements include:

Looking ahead, CoM SSA’s work in Mauritania will focus on developing green infrastructure, promoting the safe reuse of treated wastewater and improving urban sanitation systems, helping build a city that is better prepared to face today's and tomorrow's environmental challenges. Together, these efforts will help shape a greener, more resilient and more sustainable Nouakchott.

📽️⚡Dialogue virtuel : l’énergie, vecteur d’équité et de résilience urbaine en Afrique subsaharienne

Lors d’un récent Dialogue régional sur les énergies renouvelables, co-organisé par le Secrétariat de la , Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy et REN21 un message est ressorti clairement : les villes africaines en pleine expansion ont besoin de systèmes énergétiques fiables, abordables et équitables.

Des mégapoles en pleine expansion aux villes de second rang, les collectivités sont confrontées à une population croissante et à des infrastructures limitées. Malgré ces défis, les dirigeants urbains prennent des mesures pour bâtir un avenir énergétique sûr pour leurs communautés.

Le dialogue a mis en évidence les priorités suivantes :

⚙️Des prestation de services pilotée au niveau local : certaines municipalités, telles que Tswelopele (Afrique du Sud) mettent déjà en œuvre des solutions concrètes, comme l’éclairage public à LED et les compteurs intelligents, afin d’améliorer l’efficacité énergétique et de renforcer la prestation de services.

🏙️ Une collaboration multi-niveaux : comme l’a souligné Quelimane (Mozambique), les doivent être reconnus comme des partenaires à part entière dans la transition vers les énergies renouvelables, avec un meilleur accès au financement, des partenariats plus solides et la capacité de mettre en œuvre des solutions locales.

📊 Une prise de décision fondée sur les données : le comté de Kisumu (Kenya) a démontré comment des données locales fiables aident les gouvernements locaux à hiérarchiser les investissements, à planifier les infrastructures et à accélérer le déploiement des énergies renouvelables là où elles sont le plus nécessaires.

⚖️ Placer l'équité au cœur de nos préoccupations : le succès ne doit pas être mesuré uniquement en fonction de la quantité d'énergie renouvelable installée, mais selon sa capacité à améliorer la vie des populations, sans laisser personne de côté.

Les villes africaines sont des moteurs essentiels de la transition énergétique, garantissant que celle-ci apporte des avantages concrets aux communautés.

De nombreuses villes de la CoM SSA ont finalisé leurs Plans d’action pour l’accès à l’énergie durable et le climat (PAAEDC), marquant ainsi une étape importante dans leur parcours climatique. Le prochain défi consiste à traduire ces plans en actions concrètes.

Cet échange interactif entre villes réunira les villes signataires afin de partager leurs expériences, de présenter des pratiques de mise en œuvre réussies, de discuter des défis communs et d’identifier des solutions pratiques pour faire avancer la mise en œuvre des PAAEDC.

La session présentera également le soutien que peut apporter le Centre d’assistance technique de la CoM SSA, ainsi que les occasions d’apprendre des villes partenaires qui intègrent avec succès l’action climatique dans la planification, le financement et la prise de décision des municipalités.

Ce trimestre, alors que les dirigeants urbains se sont réunis pour échanger des idées, renforcer leurs partenariats et façonner un avenir résilient, les villes de la CoM SSA ont fait des progrès significatifs en matière d’action climatique.🌍

Daring Cities 2026: Local climate action plans as a bridge to NDC delivery

At the 2026 Bonn Dialogues, Chilando Chitangala Mayor of Lusaka, Vice-Chair of the CoM SSA Regional Mayors Forum, joined global leaders to discuss how local climate action can accelerate delivery of Nationally Determined Contributions ( ).

🏙️Drawing on experience of over 400 CoM SSA signatory cities, she highlighted how Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans ( ) are helping cities translate national climate commitments into concrete local action, investment and implementation.

As an example, she showcased Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, where the city’s SEACAP is closely aligned with Ethiopia’s NDC and Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy. Beyond setting targets, the plan establishes implementation arrangements, monitoring frameworks, and a pipeline of investment-ready projects, helping to turn climate ambition into action on the ground.

Across Africa, cities are already demonstrating how local leadership can drive progress on climate mitigation, adaptation, energy access and resilience. Strengthening city capacity to develop investment-ready projects and access finance will be essential to delivering both national climate goals and global climate ambitions.

Yesterday, funders, implementing partners and members of the Regional Mayors Forum gathered for the 2026 Steering Committee Meeting, hosted by the European Union’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG-INTPA). The event celebrated CoM SSA as the most significant platform for urban action in the region.

The meeting highlighted CoM SSA’s growing role as one of Africa’s leading initiatives for urban action. With more than 400 signatory cities across Sub-Saharan Africa, the focus is now on translating political commitment into implementation, investment and measurable impact. 🌍

CoM SSA is uniquely positioned to strengthen EU-Africa partnerships and help ensure that climate change and sustainable development investments deliver tangible benefits for communities on the ground. 🤝 🌱

Speaking on behalf of the RMF, Honourable Mayor Chilando Chitangala, Vice Chairperson of the RMF, reflected on the realities facing African local governments in 2026: “𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘴. The partners emphasised that the success of major investment initiatives in Africa will depend on meaningful engagement with local governments: The EU’s Global Gateway strategy and private sector engagement represent opportunities for the localisation of EU objectives through city climate planning, investment readiness and structured project preparation.

During the meeting, representatives from AECID, AFD, Expertise France, GIZ and the Secretariat host, ICLEI Africa, reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening city-led climate action and accelerating across Africa. 🏙️
