Difference Between تَوْبَة and اَسْتِغْفَار

The distinction between istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and tawbah (repentance) lies in their nuanced meanings when mentioned together or separately. When they appear together, they convey different aspects of repentance: istighfar refers to seeking forgiveness for past sins, while tawbah emphasizes the resolve to avoid sin in the future. However, when mentioned individually, each term can encompass both meanings—seeking forgiveness for past wrongs and resolve not to commit the sin again. This is why Allah instructs both in sequence: “Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance” (Quran 11:3).
