The dangerous myth of the one-size-fits-all approach to an office fire alarm. π©βπ
It is tempting to think that buying a few off-the-shelf fire alarms and mounting them to the ceiling means that your fire safety is covered.
But in South Africa, under the SANS 10139, the national code of practice for fire detection in non-domestic buildings, your building's fire alarm system must be custom-designed to match its specifications.
Here are some things to take into account:
π₯ Put a slow-reaching fire alarm in places such as the kitchen.
π₯ Think of your ceiling heights and the placement of air-conditioning vents.
π₯ Check that there arenβt any partition walls blocking your sensors.
π₯ Be aware of unzoned control panels, as you need to know which room triggered the reaction.
Not sure whether your current system meets the safety standards? We offer both supply and repair services: www.safireacademy.co.za/index.php/our-services

Wet warehouse floors + heavy loads = zero room for untrained mistakes. π
In South Africa, a forklift license is only valid for 2 years. Once that period passes, your operator is legally unauthorised to operate a forklift.
Our comprehensive forklift training course ensures your operators are certified, competent, and legally compliant.
We cater to both complete beginners and seasoned operators needing a quick refresher.

Itβs time to test your workplace extinguishers using the colour zone rule. π§―
Most dry-chemical fire extinguishers have a tiny pressure gauge near the handle. It is designed to indicate whether the unit has sufficient pressure during a fire.
π’ The green zone (ready): It means the internal pressure is optimal and the extinguisher is fully charged.
π΄ The left red zone (undercharged): If the needle dips to the left, the pressure has leaked out. This could mean pulling the lever will result in nothing more than a weak hiss.
π‘ The right red zone/yellow (overcharged): If the needle is too far to the right, the internal pressure is dangerously high. This can cause the cylinder to leak or even rupture when used.

The alarm has just gone off in your office. Do you know who you are following? π¨
Panic can spread faster than fire. That is why every workplace should have a designated, trained fire marshal who can calmly take control.
Here are some steps to take in an emergency:
π Stop and listen for your fire marshalβs instructions.
π Follow your fire marshal (in a high-vis vest).
π Walk calmly and do not run. Never stop to collect your personal belongings.
π Head to your muster point so your fire marshal can do a head count.

Is occupational health and safety training an expense or a shield for your workplace?
Here is what safety training delivers:
π₯ Reduction of workplace absenteeism: When there are proper safety protocols in place, fewer injuries mean fewer empty desks and zero productivity dips.
π₯ Building a safety culture: Your team shifts from ignoring risks to actively spotting and reporting hazards before they cause an accident.
π₯ Regulatory compliance: Proper training ensures everyone knows their legal rights and responsibilities, keeping your business safe from massive, unexpected fines.
π₯ Protects your business reputation: Prioritising employee well-being builds a reputation of trust that sets you apart from the competition.
Equip your employees with the skills they need to work safely.
