CONSTRUCTION 3: Design Strategy Document

Material Consideration/Strategies
Material consideration refers to the process of evaluating and selecting materials for a construction project based on their environmental, social, and economic impacts. This approach considers the material's:
1. Sustainability: Source, extraction, processing, transportation, and end-of-life recycling or reuse.
2. Performance: Durability, maintenance, and functionality.
3. Cost: Initial investment, life-cycle costs, and potential savings.
4. Aesthetics: Appearance, texture, and visual appeal.

By considering these factors, architects, designers, and builders can make informed decisions that balance environmental responsibility, economic viability, and social equity, ultimately creating more sustainable and resilient buildings.

‘Living In The Noom’
Location: Mexico
Designers: Sanzpont Arquitectura and Pedrajo Mas Pedrajo Arquitectos

‘Living In The Noom’ puts you in the lap of nature and luxury.
This project incorporates various eco-friendly and bioclimatic design elements, including rainwater collection, wastewater separation, and a wetland system for treating greywater. Additionally, biodigesters and composting facilities are included. A standout feature is the vertical forest on the exterior of each building, which not only adds a touch of greenery but also purifies the air, reduces temperature, and mitigates the urban heat island effect

This design concept prioritizes a tranquil and nurturing environment, built around three core principles: Wellness, Sustainability, and Flexibility. These pillars work together to create a harmonious and adaptive space that supports well-being, minimizes environmental impact, and accommodates diverse needs and preferences.

Electricity Service Head Office, Cape Town

The City of Cape Town's Electricity Head Office in Bloemhof has set a remarkable precedent in sustainability, earning a Five Star As-Built Rating and becoming the first municipal building to receive accreditation from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). This achievement demonstrates the city's commitment to environmentally responsible design and construction practices, paving the way for future sustainable development.

The building features a rooftop garden with native, drought-resistant plants that require minimal watering, reducing water consumption. Additionally, a grey water recycling system has been integrated into the design, utilizing a chemical-free treatment process to reuse water for flushing toilets and urinals. This automated system minimizes potable water usage, further reducing the building's environmental footprint. These sustainable features demonstrate a commitment to water conservation and eco-friendly practices.

SISONKE DISTRICT OFFICES

This office block boasts several innovative features that prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship. The extensive roof garden is a highlight, hosting nearly 100 species of indigenous plants. The surrounding site has been restored to its natural Natal Mist-belt Grassland habitat, promoting biodiversity. The building's design maximizes natural daylight, while motion-sensor linked lighting ensures energy efficiency. Natural ventilation and a heat-pump system minimize energy consumption. Water conservation is achieved through efficient fixtures and rainwater harvesting for irrigation. Encouraging eco-friendly transportation, the venue offers on-site bicycle storage and preferential parking for fuel-efficient vehicles and motorcycles. These features make the office block a model of sustainable design and operation.

Design Theory 360S: Academic Writing
Thesis statement: Permaculture Design In Rooftop Gardens In Cape Town Requires An Assessment Of Climatic Conditions And Available Resources To Create A Sustainable System.

Abstract
Rooftop gardens are emerging as vital components of urban sustainability efforts, particularly in cities like Cape Town where climatic conditions and resource scarcity pose significant challenges. This essay explores the application of permaculture design principles in rooftop gardens within the context of Cape Town's unique environmental dynamics. Through a careful assessment of climatic conditions and available resources, such as water and space, rooftop gardens can be transformed into sustainable systems that address food security issues and promote environmental resilience. Strategies such as incorporating drought-resistant plants, harvesting rainwater, and utilizing renewable energy sources are crucial for mitigating the impact of Cape Town's Mediterranean climate on rooftop garden productivity. Furthermore, community involvement and innovative approaches like composting and vertical farming enhance resource efficiency and contribute to the sustainability of rooftop permaculture systems. By creating sustainable rooftop gardens, Cape Town can not only address food insecurity but also serve as a model for urban sustainability worldwide.

FUTURE AFRICA INNOVATION CAMPUS

The Future Africa Landscape paradigm aims to revolutionize urban environments by challenging conventional city landscape norms. The focus will be on harnessing the potential of urban landscapes to provide sustenance for both wildlife and humans, showcasing the versatility of South African and African plants. By incorporating predominantly indigenous plant species, carefully selected for their edibility and functionality, Future Africa will serve as a living testament to the possibilities of utilizing indigenous landscapes as a food resource. This innovative approach will not only highlight the potential of African plants but also provide a sustainable and functional model for urban landscapes, promoting biodiversity, food security, and ecological resilience.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWING

Construction details, also known as construction drawings, are detailed graphical representations that provide a high level of detail about the technical characteristics of various structure components. These drawings are used to communicate the design intent and technical specifications to contractors, builders, and other stakeholders involved in the construction process.

Construction details typically include:
- Scaled drawings
- Dimensions and measurements
- Material specifications
- Connection details
- Assembly instructions
- Technical notes

Studio Class Critiques
Design critiques are performed to evaluate a design and provide feedback on whether or not it meets project’s objectives and user needs. Design critiques encourage collaboration within teams and provide a boost to positive team culture toward improving design ideas. The feedback we receive during design critiques helps designers think outside of the box, often leading to better, more innovative choices throughout the design process.
