Youth unemployment in South Africa is a serious and persistent problem that affects millions of young people and the economy as a whole.
According to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) by Statistics South Africa, the unemployment rate for those aged 15-24 was 62.1% and for those aged 25-34 was 40.7% in the first quarter of 2023. These rates are much higher than the national average of 32.9% and reflect the challenges that young people face in finding work, education or training opportunities. The QLFS also reported that 36.1% of young people aged 15-24 were "not in employment, education or training" (NEET) in Q1:2023, meaning that they were disengaged from the labour market and had lost hope of finding a job that suits their skills or location. The NEET rate was higher for women than men in this age group, indicating gender disparities and inequalities. The NEET rate for those aged 15-34 was 44.7%, which means that almost half of this population group was idle and unproductive.
Youth unemployment has negative consequences for the individual, the society and the environment. It leads to poverty, social exclusion, crime, violence, substance abuse, mental health problems and reduced life expectancy. It also hampers economic growth, innovation, social cohesion and human development. It wastes the potential and talents of young people who could contribute to the country's development and prosperity. There are various factors that contribute to youth unemployment in South Africa, such as low economic growth, skills mismatch, labour market rigidities, poor education quality, lack of work experience, discrimination, corruption and nepotism. Some of these factors are structural and require long-term policy interventions and reforms, while others are cyclical and depend on the state of the economy and the demand for labour.
There are also some initiatives and programmes that aim to address youth unemployment in South Africa, such as the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector that creates jobs for young people with digital skills, the S’thesha Waya Waya project that provides training and employment opportunities for youth in KwaZulu-Natal, and the green economy that offers potential for sustainable and inclusive development. However, these initiatives need to be scaled up, coordinated and monitored to ensure their effectiveness and impact.
eJobs is one of the promising solutions to youth unemployment is eJobs, an online platform that connects employers and job seekers across various sectors and regions in South Africa. eJobs helps young people access relevant information, resources and opportunities to enhance their employability and career prospects. eJobs also helps employers find qualified and motivated candidates for their vacancies and reduce their recruitment costs and time. eJobs is a user-friendly, secure and reliable platform that leverages technology to bridge the gap between supply and demand in the labour market.
Youth unemployment in South Africa is a complex and multifaceted problem that requires urgent attention and action from all stakeholders, including the government, the private sector, the civil society, the academia and the youth themselves.
It is not only a social and economic issue, but also a moral and human rights issue. eJobs
