ARE YOU FEELING DISCONNECTED—FROM YOUR PARTNER, YOUR FAMILY, OR EVEN YOURSELF?

Perhaps you and your partner keep having the same argument without ever really resolving it. You may still love each other deeply, but communication has become tense, distant or exhausting.

Or perhaps you are the person who appears to be coping—while privately feeling overwhelmed, anxious, burnt out or unsure how much longer you can continue carrying everything.

You don’t have to wait until things reach breaking point before asking for support.

I am Jacqui Hackett, a Cape Town-based counsellor, life coach and registered nurse. I offer warm, practical and neurodiversity-affirming counselling for:

💛 Couples experiencing conflict, disconnection or a breakdown in trust
💛 Individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma or burnout
💛 Autistic and ADHD adults, couples and families
💛 Parents supporting neurodivergent children or young adults
💛 Blended families and relationship transitions
💛 People who feel stuck and need a safe space to work out what comes next

My approach is compassionate but also practical. Counselling is not only about talking through what has happened—it is about understanding the patterns keeping you stuck and developing realistic ways to create change.

I draw on Gottman couples therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and other evidence-informed approaches, adapting the process to suit the individual or couple rather than expecting everyone to fit the same mould.

Sessions are available:

📍 In person in Kirstenhof, Cape Town
💻 Online via Google Meet
🌿 Individual and couples counselling
🧠 Sensory profile assessments for adults and families

If any of this resonates, you are very welcome to send me a private message or WhatsApp me on 079 490 9019 for more information. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out—we can begin wherever you are.

Sarah Jessica Parker Shares A Powerful Reminder About The Hidden Reality Of Chronic Pain 💜✨

Sarah Jessica Parker’s words capture something many people with chronic pain wish others understood: being able to function does not automatically mean you're having a good day. People living with chronic illness often learn to push through pain because responsibilities still need to be handled, work still needs to be done, and life doesn't always pause when symptoms become overwhelming. What others see as strength may actually be someone using every ounce of energy they have to get through a few hours.

Sarah Jessica Parker has spoken about the realities of living with chronic pain and the difficult choices that can come with managing symptoms while continuing with everyday responsibilities. Her message highlights how appearances can be deeply misleading when it comes to invisible illness.

For someone with fibromyalgia or another chronic pain condition, accomplishing something doesn't mean the pain disappeared. It may simply mean they were able to be stronger than their symptoms for a short time. A productive day can sometimes come with exhaustion afterward, and a smile doesn't always mean someone feels well. This is why compassion matters. Instead of assuming someone is fine because they are active, remember that you may only be seeing a small part of their struggle. Chronic pain is real, even when someone manages to keep moving forward. 💜✨

NOT ALL BURNOUT IS THE SAME.

Occupational burnout often grows from prolonged workplace stress.

Autistic burnout can grow from the cumulative effort of navigating an environment that repeatedly asks more of a person’s nervous system than it can sustainably give.

Masking.
Sensory overload.
Social demands.
Executive-function demands.
Constantly adapting.
Pushing through.
Trying to appear “fine.”

Over time, this may lead to profound exhaustion, increased sensory sensitivity, reduced functioning, difficulty communicating and less capacity to manage everyday tasks.

It is not laziness.
It is not attention-seeking.
It is not a lack of resilience.

And it may not be resolved by simply taking a weekend off.

Recovery often requires reduced demands, meaningful accommodations, sensory support, safe unmasking and time to rebuild capacity gradually.

Both forms of burnout are real.
Both deserve compassion.
But the support must fit the cause.

What has your nervous system been working hard to manage?

BURNOUT DOESN’T ALWAYS LOOK THE SAME.

We often think of burnout as the result of working too hard for too long. But for autistic and other neurodivergent people, burnout may involve something deeper and more pervasive.

Occupational burnout is commonly associated with prolonged workplace stress. It may show up as:

• ongoing exhaustion
• feeling detached, cynical or unmotivated
• reduced confidence and effectiveness at work
• difficulty concentrating or sustaining productivity

Autistic burnout can develop through cumulative stress across many areas of life—not only work. Contributing factors may include:

• prolonged masking or hiding natural autistic traits
• repeatedly pushing through sensory overload
• navigating environments that do not accommodate neurological needs
• sustained social and communication demands
• executive-function demands exceeding available capacity
• insufficient time, safety or support for genuine recovery

Alongside profound exhaustion, an autistic person may temporarily experience:

• increased sensory sensitivity
• greater difficulty communicating or finding words
• reduced executive functioning
• difficulty managing tasks they could previously manage
• a stronger need for solitude, predictability and reduced demands
• less capacity to mask or “hold everything together”

This is not laziness, regression, avoidance or a lack of resilience.

And autistic burnout is not necessarily “worse” than occupational burnout. Both can be deeply distressing, and they can occur together. The important difference is that the support must match what is driving the burnout.

A holiday or a few days away may provide some relief, but recovery from autistic burnout often requires more than rest. It may involve reducing demands, adapting sensory and social environments, introducing meaningful accommodations, allowing safe unmasking and rebuilding capacity gradually.

Sometimes the most helpful question is not:

“What is wrong with you?”

but rather:

“What has your nervous system been working so hard to manage—and what needs to change?”

If you recognise yourself or someone you care about in this description, greater understanding can be the beginning of a kinder and more sustainable way forward.
