Now that the customary 'adrenaline rush' of the first week is behind us, we are back at the pointy end of the academic enterprise for this year. The ship has sailed and is 'steady as she goes'.
We welcome all our students and wish them the best of the year ahead.
A special 'shout out' to the 112 first years (71 on the BSc in Construction Studies programme and 41 on the BSc in Property Studies programme).
Time is going to be a premium pretty soon, but there is time yet to read the current edition of Masakhe, our digital magazine, at the link:

Tomorrow Friday the 19th at 12h00, the omnipresent Mahlangu twins, along with the 700-odd students of UCT Department of Construction Economics & Management, shall have formal access to this year official results, to mark the effective end of the 2025 academic year. We wish Khali Mahlangu and Khaya Mahlangu well. As we do for all of our students, all of them legends in their own right.
This year, like those gone before, has been marked by triumphs and tears, hard work and hard play, and everything in between. As it comes to a close, we congratulate those that have completed their studies, secure in the knowledge that they will be worthy ambassadors of the University of Cape Town, the finest institution on the African continent. To the rest, we are looking forward to welcoming you back in 2026 to continue the walk of excellence together to its logical conclusion.
We wish all our students a safe, restful and pleasant holiday season.

Associate Professor Francois Viruly is retiring from UCT Department of Construction Economics & Management on 31 December, after decades of illustrious service to the academy and society, nationally and internationally. His legacy cannot be adequately captured in a few sentences.
He has been Head of the WITS School of Construction Economics and Management, President of the International Real Estate Society and President of the African Real Estate Society, among other important roles. He is the founding Director of the Urban Real Estate Research Unit. As a public intellectual, his commentary has helped to greatly shape the development of the South African and African property industry.
We feature him and his thoughts on engaged scholarship in the current (CEM Legends) issue of Masakhe:
