Sometimes the best help you can give a client is to tell them: “Not yet.”

Recently, someone approached us wanting to apply for cruise ship work.

There was one major challenge:

They had never worked before.

It would have been very easy to simply create a beautiful CV, add impressive-sounding skills and send them off to apply.

But that wouldn't be honest — and it wouldn't actually solve the problem.

Cruise applications can require applicants to provide employment history and, depending on the role and application process, relevant experience or references.

So instead of inventing experience, we discussed ways they could start building a genuine track record — including volunteering and gaining experience where possible.

Because at Assist by Vuyo, we're not here to make your CV look good at any cost.

We're here to help you work with what you actually have and figure out what you can realistically do next.

Sometimes the answer isn't:

“Apply now.”

Sometimes it's:

And that's okay.

A lot of job seekers spend time worrying about colours, fonts and templates.

But the bigger question is : Does your CV quickly show that you’re the right person for the job?

When I review a CV, these are some of the first things I look at:

1. Is the CV targeted to the position?
Your profile, skills and experience should immediately connect with the job you’re applying for.

2. Are you showing your impact?
Don’t just list what you were responsible for.

Instead of :
“Responsible for managing stock.”

Try:
“Managed weekly stock counts and reduced stock variances by 15%.”

Numbers help employers see the value you brought to your previous roles.

3. Can an ATS read your CV?
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems to screen applications before a recruiter even sees them.

If your CV isn't structured correctly or doesn't contain relevant keywords, it could be filtered out before anyone reads it.

So before you send out another 20 applications with no response, take another look at your CV.

Sometimes the problem isn't your experience.

It's how your experience is being presented.
