Muriel Brand School Muriel Brand School Official page for learners with physical and learning disabilities. The story of Muriel Brand School started in 1964.

That was the year in which the school's sponsoring body, the Eastern Transvaal Cerebral Palsy Association (now the Gauteng Cerebral Palsy Association), was formed. Their fundraising, under the inspiring leadership of Mrs Muriel Brand, made the establishment of a new school for children with cerebral palsy possible. Muriel Brand School first opened its doors on 14 January 1969. It started in very o

ld, barely renovated mine buildings with 27 learners and 18 staff members. As learner numbers increased, it became evident that larger premises were needed. The Brakpan Town Council offered land to the new school in August 1970 and during September 1973 the first sod was turned on the site of the new school in Brenthurst, Brakpan. September 9, 1977 saw the closing of the State Mines premises and the move to the modern new school in Brenthurst, Brakpan. The first matric class wrote their finals at the end of 1981. At the end of the school's 36th year in 2005, the learner enrolment was 460 and the personnel complement comprised of more than a 100 professional and support staff members. The school is classed as a provincial public special school and is subsidised by the Gauteng Department of Education. Gauteng is one of the nine provinces of South Africa

“You don’t have to do it all, and you don’t have to do it alone.”

Sometimes, the people who seem to be doing okay are the ones carrying the heaviest burdens. 💛

Reach out. Ask how they’re really doing. Listen without judgement. And remind them that they don’t have to face their struggles alone.

Let’s make space for honest conversations and help one another find hope. 🎗️

Yesterday we celebrated more than just World Physiotherapy Day, we celebrated the hands and hearts of the amazing Physio team at Muriel Brand School.

Lead by Ms. Cherese Trenwith, Ms. Chani Basson, Ms. Ramokone Mahloana and Mr. Stephen Fourie give our learners so much more than movement. They bring hope, offer encouragement, show compassion, but most importantly they give them the CONFIDENCE to overcome any challenge.

Thank you! Your work changes lives in ways that cannot be measured.

As the rain of the past few days finally begins to ease, we find ourselves especially grateful for the people who never let the weather stand in the way of getting our learners home safely.

To our incredible bus drivers: THANK YOU

Thank you for driving through the pouring rain, difficult roads and severe traffic, waiting patiently when journeys take longer than expected, and making sure that every learner reaches home safely. But most of all, thank you for the extra mile, the one that doesn’t appear on a map.

These are the things that may go unseen, but they never go unappreciated.

We are reminded once again that what makes our school special isn’t only what happens inside the classroom, it’s the people who show up every day, in all kinds of weather, and give a little more than what is expected.

To our bus drivers and all our dedicated staff: thank you for caring, thank you for persevering, and thank you for always going the extra mile for our learners.

We are truly grateful.

Some of our learners were fortunate to attend a wheelchair basketball coaching workshop hosted by Jumping Kids. They had the opportunity to learn new skills, learn more rules of the game, and most importantly, have fun and connect with learners from other schools.

They had a fantastic time! We are grateful for opportunities like these and look forward to continuing to develop our wheelchair basketball programme.
