Greetings Black Lives Matter Family!

Happy Black History Month! As we vision and build Black futures, we are deeply committed to the African principle of Sankofa...that we must embrace and honor the freedom fighters, struggles, and lessons learned from the past as we chart the course forward.

Black History Month was founded initially as Negro History Week in 1926 by our honored Ancestor Dr. Carter G. Woodson and taken as month of remembrance by Black Student Union organizers at Kent State University in 1969. It was, and continues to be an expression of Black autonomy, not officially recognized by the U.S. government until 1976.

Since our birth, Black Lives Matter has always acknowledged that we are but one marker in the long struggle for Black freedom. Those who walked before us continue to serve as a source for us. Over the years, our Black History Month efforts have ranged from political education sessions, to social media posts, to arts initiatives.

This year, we are most excited about the deepened partnership with and the daily offering of Black history as political education by some of our leading Black radical intellectuals. Daily installments will be posted on our Instagram page: . It is our hope that these brief tellings of Black history will inspire us to struggle forward with renewed vigor and vision.

On this first September Sunday As we remember Prof Gerwel who "by the time [he] Gerwel became rector and vice chancellor of his Alma Mater UWC in 1987, he had already gained prominence as proponent of Steve Biko’s black consciousness ideology in the 1970s."

On this day, 06 September 1977, sustained a massive brain hemorrhage resulting from brain injury. He was beaten up to a pulp by about five policemen. After suffering from brain injury they still kept him in standing position, hands and feet chained in steel. He had been arrested on 18 August 1977 at a roadblock in Grahamstown, together with his colleague, Peter Jones. Biko was detained and interrogated at Walmer Police Station in Port Elizabeth, where he was beaten up until he sustained brain injuries. The Police then collaborated with the medical establishment as Doctors Lang and Tucker were brought in to examine him. Instead of giving him necessary and immediate medical attention, they claimed Biko was "shamming".

Hello friends ✊🏾 The pen is still mightier than the sword!

We haven't been active in a long time. But still, we are thinking of the late great Professor Jakes Gerwel, "the son of an Eastern Cape sheep farmer, Gerwel was to become one of the most influential figures in the country", on this September Sunday, Heritage Month 2020 in South Africa. His contribution and memory live on.

We will be undergoing a few changes but we will remain authentic to our UWC heritage and adopt a broader approach in sharing the same resources & content.

To a better UWC & Africa 🖤🙏🏾🙏🏾
