At Kasseslvlei Comprehensive High School we are incredibly proud to celebrate one of our own, Dr Nicole Thomas, who has reached remarkable heights as an astrophysicist. ๐
From our classrooms to the stars โ your journey continues to inspire every learner who walks through our gates. The future is limitless!
Meet Astrophysicist, Dr Nicole Thomas
If you asked Nicole Thomas what she does for a living, you might struggle to understand what sheโs talking about. You see, she is an Astrophysicist who uses cosmological simulations to investigate the role supermassive black holes play in galaxy evolution. If you did not understand that, itโs ok. Very few of us do but letโs keep it simple and start at the beginning.
As a kid growing up in Bellville South, Nicole Thomas had always looked up at the night skies, hoping to find out what lies beyond it. And that is exactly what she did.
After matriculating from Kasselsvlei High School, she registered for a science degree, completing a Bachelors in Physics at the University of the Western Cape, an honours in Astrophysics and Space Science at the University of Cape Townโ, and a Masters in Astronomy and Astrophysics, again at the Western Cape.
In 2020, thanks to funding from the Square Kilometre Array, she completed her PhD in Astrophysics, also from the Western Cape. For her PhD, she used โstate-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamic simulationsโ to understand how supermassive black holes affect galaxies.
After completing her PhD, she became a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Institute for Computational Cosmology and Center for Extragalactic Astronomy at Durham University. She was also invited to the 69th Nobel Meeting in Germany, visited the prestigious Max Planck Society of Research Institutes (also in Germany), spent a year conducting research for her PhD at Oxford University in the UK and did research at the Royal Observatory in Scotland.
Currently, Nicole is a Jim Buckee Fellow in Astrophysics and Research Associate at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) at the University of Western Australia. She is considered to be an expert in Blackhole Simulations and a large part of her job includes using supercomputers to run these simulations.
