Qurbani Meat for the Volunteers

Question: Some korban (Udhiyyah/Qurbani) service organisers make a habit of putting aside Udhiyyah meat for their volunteers. The role of these volunteers include slaughtering, shearing, cutting meat of the slaughtered lamb into small pieces for distribution work. Is it permissible for the korban service provider to pay the volunteers a wage or give them a tip for their efforts from the Udhiyyah meat? I've heard that it is sunnah to put aside 1/3 of the Udhiyyah meat for yourself, 1/3 for the poor and destitute, and 1/3 for anyone, even the rich. Can the korban service provider (as a wakil for slaughtering and distribution) consider giving his volunteers from the last category?

Answer: Wa 'AlaykummusSalam Wa RahmatulLah Wa Barakatuh,

You are correct; it is sunnah to divide the meat into the 3 parts mentioned in your question but this is the case only if the korban was not the outcome of a nazar (vow). If the korban was performed out of a nazar, then every part of the slaughtered animal, including its skin and organs, must be distributed to the faqir and/or miskin (destitute and poor) without exception. If the korban was not performed out of a nazar, then it is wajib to give to the faqir and/or miskin any non-trivial portion of the slaughtered animal’s meat (note: organs and skin are excluded here) but it is best to give away all of it, with the exception of a morsel, to the faqir and/or miskin. The morsel is a token consumption for the person undertaking the korban (the “Participant”) to partake in the barakah (blessing) of the korban.

Secondly, the korban service organiser (the “Organiser”) should pay attention to how much of the meat is meant for the faqir and/or miskin, and how much can be given to those from outside this category (i.e. non-faqir and/or miskin) and distribute it appropriately. Technically, a volunteer is someone who undertakes a task without expectation of compensation for the services rendered; he does not have a right to claim any compensation from the korban meat or from anywhere else for that matter, but if he fulfills the criteria of being a faqir or a miskin in the Shari’ah, he can be given from the sacrificed animal, whether it was from the portion meant for the faqir and/or miskin or from elsewhere. Otherwise, the total he receives should not (i.e. that it is not sunnah) be more than what was meant for the non-faqir and miskin.

Thirdly, the Organiser should take note that it is not permissible to pay volunteers a wage from the korban meat.

Fourthly, where the Organiser is a wakil (shari’y commissioned agent to undertake the korban on behalf of the korban participant), he should bear in mind that, as a wakil, he can only take and pass on what is required in fulfilling the korban and its related expenses; these expenses may include the wage he pays those assisting him e.g. butchers, deliverymen etc. However, the Organiser may not take any excess from what the Participant has paid over and above the cost of the korban and its related expenses except with the permission of the korban participant. This permission need not be expressed such that even the Organiser’s knowledge of the Participant’s consent due to close ties of friendship suffices.

Finally, note that korban meat taken by anyone who is not a faqir or a miskin, cannot be sold off or used as a mode of payment whereas the faqir and miskin given with full ownership of the korban meat and can do anything they want with it including selling it off.

I hope this helps and Allah knows best.
