When you birth at home, you are as safe as you are in hospital. This is evidence based. But outcomes and the experience for you and your baby are far more positive.

Just the act of planning a home birth greatly improves the likelihood of an intervention free, unmedicated vaginal birth. Which is as nature designed and is the best thing for you, for your baby, for your recovery, bonding as well as your breastfeeding journey which impacts your whole post partum.

There is a very delicate cocktail of hormones at play that starts labour, keeps it going and completes it - with the delivery of the placenta, the initial bonding and first feed and then the on going nourishment of your baby and your healing and recovery. This is how we survive.

Everything we do to interfere or intervene with this does have an impact. Of course sometimes women need support with all or some of these - for many many reasons. And of course sometimes there is also a need for medical support, medical care, medications and so on. But we cannot deny the benefits to us and our baby and the mother and baby as one of physiological birth.

This is what we should be aiming for. And if you are healthy, and baby is, and you’ve had a healthy pregnancy get informed about what natural physiological birth is and how best to support and nuture it - first and foremost. And look into how home births can increases chances of achieving this. You are entitled to birth how and where you want and feel supported, calm, empowered.

This incredible mother took her power back and birthed at home, undisturbed in her own time and it was the most incredible thing to witness. Story coming soon from the beautiful powerful queen _katemc__

Instead of asking the obvious - when are you due / do you know if it’s a boy or a girl…. Maybe we should be asking women what their birth team looks like. Have they hired a doula? What’s their understanding of physiological birth, what are you doing to prepare your body and mind and work with your baby during labour. What’s your dream birth? What preparation have you done to support your vision? How much are you investing?

Because these are the things that matter. Even just planning a home birth improve outcomes - because the work we do to prepared ourselves and understand means we don’t fear it and we have worked to ensure we have the tools to work with labour not against it… and we know what nurtures and protects and keeps it moving - the environment and who is in the room matters a lot! With education we know what potentially derails it and we have people around us to help make sure we avoid that happening.

Pushing birth to the back of your mind - especially if you have fears is unlikely to be that supportive. Of course we don’t know as birth is unpredictable but when we don’t know what choices we’d make in the event that choices need to be made…. Those choices along with your power get taken and made for you. And fear interferes with the delicate cocktail of hormones that are the fuel.

Women who report positive experiences feel supported and honoured and respected. You need to understand how your body and baby are working together and have your preferences and choices respected to feel these things. You need continuity of support from trusted people around you. Doulas improve outcomes. Chances of needed medications or inventions Inc surgery decline. If you are wanted a natural physiological birth - understand what that is, how to protect it and get a team around you to advocate for that when you are in the throws of labour and no longer can

If you are a Hertfordshire mum under West Herts Trust these latest figures should make you stop in your tracks

54% c section rate. 54%!

A few years ago the trust recorded a c section rate of 23% . By 2023 that rose to 30% and we have near on doubled it.

With only 4 (FOUR!!!!) babies born in water - the exact same number as the home births so we can probably assume that the measly four homebirths were water births…… I can’t even 😢

Figures like this BREAK MY HEART.

92% of births happened in a labour ward. What this is saying is that 92% of you require to be under the care of consultants and obstetricians and doctors rather than in midwife led care? Rather than in the care of those that SPECIALISE in natural birth. Or perhaps chosen to be. I get that. But likely labelled with some issue or another that requires medical attention? Really?! 92%!!! Under the care of those there to medically manage birth… and this is the result.

Healthy women and healthy babies should be supported by midwives or birth workers there to protect and facilitate natural physiological vaginal births. We are stripping the next generation of babies of sooooo many birth right benefits. Benefits that last a lifetime. And the recovery and trauma for mums too 😢

It’s just too much. Women aren’t broken! Suddenly I’m the last 3-4 years you all haven’t forgotten how to give birth?!

I can support you. Help to educate and prepare you and your body for labour and birth. Understanding what natural physiological birth is and how to protect it. Because I promise you - and these stats confirm it… that going into a medical setting, set up to medically manage birth DOES result in medically managed birth!

When your doctor, midwife, obstetrician, mother, friend, whoever. has an OPINION… it’s just that. A perspective, an opinion based on their own experience and point of view. It’s not the truth or fact.

Even when science and data is used - and we know only up to 12% of hospital recommendations are based on grade A evidence it is still only a view, a suggestion or opinion.

Only you know what you and your body and baby needs. With your own research, your own gut feeling or knowing, asking your own questions and sharing your views and investigating from your own stand point. Gathering an array of information from different sources. This is how you make informed choices that are right for you. And it’s ok to ignore everyone else, disregard what’s being said if it doesn’t sit right, or if you know that time and time again it has not led to positive outcomes. Do something different. DO YOU.

Do you know what I find wild? How much we infantilise women.

I’m not even talking about the “be a good girl and hop on the bed” narrative (which is a disgrace btw)… I’m talking about speaking the TRUTH. Women can handle it. And when we stop sugar coating and wrapping everything in cotton wool we might get to a place where women think again about accepting the s**t show cascade of interventions they’re being coerced into because it’s being wrapped up in a bow for them to accept without the list of benefits they’re saying goodbye to in the same swoop.

Of course hospitals, medication, intervention and surgery have a place. But the truth is a natural undisturbed physiological birth IS the best thing for you and your baby if there isn’t a medical reason or emergency that says otherwise. This should always be the goal and we need to stop accepting anything less without good reason.

This isn’t about shamming women’s choices, or anyone’s preferences but everything we do to interfere with the natural flow of labour from pre, to start to finish including the birth of the placenta - which is the completion of “birth” not just when we see a baby has an impact and repercussions and affects things for potentially a life time. Of course it does.

If you would like to know how best to protect, facilitate, nurture and hopefully achieve a natural physiological birth even with all the unpredictability and wildness of it and with alllll the benefits that come with - let’s talk.

Because I trust women wholly and I have nothing but positivity to spread when it comes to supporting you to have the birth experience you are dreaming of.

I TRUST YOU. I TRUST BIRTH. And I believe you deserve and can handle the TRUTH.

When your body or baby calls… you should be able to respond.

This is the magical dance that unfolds - both mother and baby playing a role. Respect your body and that your baby isn’t just there for the ride… but an integral and active part of the process.

Babies know instinctively how to move, when to rotate or take rest , and when you are in tune and can feel into your body, into the power of the surges, the sensations, you can be guided to support what it is your body and your babe need.
Working together. As one.

This is the magic of the feelings however intense they may be. There is an always a reason in nature and while we have no reason why labour should be painful… we do need to feel in order to respond. This is the purpose and we must surrender to it. Blocking it has an impact.

Practice tuning in to this in pregnancy. And prepare yourself for this in labour and birth. We will cover all of this as we prepare yourself to cross the threshold and meet your baby. Honouring your baby and working through the best relaxation and comfort measures FOR YOU. To facilitate a labour where the baby is respected and you give your body what it needs to facilitate contractions which are strong and efficient. To do the job they are there to do.

How do you learn how to be a birth worker? What is the training?

Yes you can research, daily. Spend all your time listening to podcasts, reading, researching, listening to mothers and other birth workers, midwives and piece together the wisdom shared.

Sit in the birth room and witness the unfolding of labour time and time and time again.

I also sit in circle with the truly magical Bec ✹ North Cymru | Traditonal Birthkeeper + Mentor and the most incredible 8 other women. Pouring over the science, biology, physiology, biomechanics, somatics, midwifery, witchery, herbology, natural world, nervous system, shamanic practices… and in meditation, in ritual, sometimes in dance, in tears, in holding we are coming together to nurture each other and flourish. To walk on each others journey, embrace everyone’s unique gifts and share share and share again.

With only a few moons left of my journey I wanted to share what I do to prepare myself for the women I walk with in future. And this gorgeous clip from Bec ✹ North Cymru | Traditonal Birthkeeper + Mentor’s newsletter , and the words almost in prose sum it up beautifully 🤍
I will never ever stop learning. I will sit in circle with wise women and sit on my knees in awe of women forever more

When we are made of actual magic. It cannot leave us. We have to believe and trust in that power, surrender to and it and use it to our advantage.
The magic and powerful of labour is yours and your babies. It needs space, patience, holding, nurturing to be able to create what it is here to do and to unfold as it was designed.

Don’t let anyone dim that light. The magic is yours. Hold it, and invest in having trusted people around it to hold it safe when you no longer can

I believe in women 💫

Yes yes yes your birth IS worth investing in.

Evidence shows doula’s improve outcomes. Having continuous support in pregnancy and labour leads to more a positive experience for mothers and babies. You have a much greater chance of spontaneous vaginal delivery and the benefits that come with last a LIFETIME.

You are literally investing in making your babies entrance to the world a happier and healthier one for you both.

Having someone who knows you, knows what matters to you and that can protect that and help navigate the system and your choices is incredibly valuable. Why are we not all investing the same time and money into this one magical day like we do all the other life events ?

A shorter labour, less likelihood for needing drugs, less chance of c section. PLEASE. We must start investing in ourselves. You and your baby ARE worth it.
