Polyrhythms represent two different divisions of the same length of time. In this video I demonstrate how a pulse can be divided in 2 and 3, and how they sound together.
The left stick and the right stick begin together, follow their individual paths, and then return to the pulse together. Along the way they make music together.
Uh oh, maybe this isn't just a drum lesson. 😉

Spring seems very far away right now in snowed-in Toronto, but I've been doing some spring cleaning nonetheless of my DRUMEVERYDAY YouTube Channel.
Below are some curated playlists of over 30 drum video drum lessons.
I stand 100% behind the drumming knowledge imparted in these videos, much less so about the historical haircut and wardrobe choices in these videos that span a few years. 😉

Some drum fun and discovery from this week.
My student and I are playing a musical phrase opposite one another. The phrase consists of a "beat" and a "fill", and I ask them to pick which one they will start their phrase with, and then I play the opposite phrase structure.
This approach can be more challenging and more rewarding than playing in unison. My student is not following me, nor mimicking me; they are playing independently from me, but connected by the shared time flow (the "time signature").
Moving independently, but always interconnected to the other. As you play this way, you can hear and feel how the other's playing compliments and supports yours, despite being quite literally opposite.
Uh oh, maybe this lesson isn't just about drumming. 😉 💚🥁
Let's drum together!

I saw a post recently that claimed (and reasonably so) that 90% of jobs can be taught. The intangible is an individual’s determination and willingness to learn. Some might argue that those intangibles can’t be taught, “you either have it or you don’t”, but this is where arts education becomes so powerful.
Learning to be artistic and creative is what develops these intangible things like persistence and making incremental gains towards a larger goal. Taking music lessons is not about preparing to be a professional performer; it’s about discovery, expression, and LISTENING.
Learning to make music teaches you:
to be curious
to express yourself
to listen to others
Sounds like a recipe for happiness, doesn’t it?

I see dozens of students in my studio here in hashtag for hashtag but I also offer live ZOOM lessons, and pre-recorded video lessons that students can download and re-use. Here's an excerpt from such a lesson, and shout-out to my home gardening skills! The plant in the background was a gift from my daughter's 7th grade teacher in 2022 and it was a single stalk in a palm-sized pot.
