This week we’d like to feature another submission from our Earth Day contest! Abby Hebenton has been using her time to check in on trees she planted two years ago in the bottom photos! This year she removed weeds and dead leaves from around the trees. She also worked to check in on the stakes and tubes that were supporting the trees and replace them if needed. Thanks, Abby!

Happy Earth Day, greens! To celebrate this year, Evergreen hosted a photo contest in which we asked members to send in an artistic photo of them doing something that positively impacts the planet. We had SO MANY beautiful picture submissions, and it was a tough choice to choose a winner, so we’ve decided that we will post each pic that we received, weekly, for the next 10 weeks. But, we voted and our first place winner for the contest is Evergreen member, Micaela Crawford (pictured below).

In her photo, Micaela used an old egg carton to plant seeds like cucumbers 🥒, tomatoes 🍅, squash, and herbs🌱 . For the soil in the egg carton, she mixed potting soil with some coffee grounds. When the seeds grow & are ready to be transplanted, Micaela and her mom have prepped dirt for a garden by creating a compost pile consisting of scraps from fruits, vegetables, and egg shells that nourish the soil.

Congrats, Micaela! & Thank you to EVERYONE who gave the planet some love for Earth Day 2020. 🌞 You all made this contest a success. Remember, stay green, stay cool, and opt outside.

Our exec board and several Evergreen members made an appearance today (9/20/19) at the Pittsburgh Climate Strike. It was refreshing to see so many people gather together with the goal to protest the inaction on climate change and spread awareness of the climate crisis. Total sustainability needs will be the way of the future, and we all helped to ignite this movement by raising our voices and signs. 🙌

Urban areas are difficult for someone who wants to maintain a fresh diet. The main reason is money: fresh vegetables and fruits are expensive, because the produce has to be shipped and you end up paying for the delivery cost more than for the quality of the product itself. With the Mobile Good Food....

We had a great day gardening with our community partners at Spring Clean Up 2019! The sun was shining for us today, and the effort everyone put in was fantastic. Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped to make a difference!
