UST would like to give a big thank you to Tracy Slater, author of Together in Manzanar, for speaking with our eighth graders last week. Tracy shared insights into her latest narrative nonfiction project, The Great Kobe Escape, which explores how Kobe provided a lifeline to thousands of Jewish refugees during World War II.

Students also learned about her research process, working with archives and primary sources, and the journey from idea to book proposal. It was a powerful and timely discussion ahead of our Grade 8 trip to Hiroshima. We wish Tracy all the best with this exciting project and look forward to seeing it in print!

G6/7 residential trip to Matsumoto🏯
On Day 1, students explored the beautiful Matsumoto Castle before wandering through the charming shopping streets filled with lucky frogs. They then visited the Matsumoto City Museum of Art to view the famous works of Yayoi Kusama, one of Japan’s most celebrated artists and a native of Matsumoto.
Day 2 took students to the Okaya Silk Factory, where they toured the entire silk-making process—from silkworms and cocoons to the finished product. They also learned about the important role silk production played in Japan’s industrial development. Later, students enjoyed time at Lake Suwa before exploring the Matsumoto City Museum to deepen their understanding of the region’s history.
On the final morning, students spent time at Alps Park, enjoying lunch, racing through the ropes course, and riding the Dream Coaster, all against the stunning backdrop of the Japanese Alps. They also took time to reflect on the trip and share their gratitude for the experiences, friendships, and memories they created together.
What a wonderful blend of history, culture, learning, and adventure. Here’s to many more fun and educational trips ahead! 🥳

🇯🇵 G8 Residential Trip – Hiroshima 🇯🇵
Our Grade 8 students have had an incredible few days in Hiroshima, combining history, learning, reflection, and adventure.
As part of their Humanities studies, students have been learning about World War II this term. This residential trip provided a valuable opportunity to deepen that learning by visiting some of the most important historical sites connected to the war. At the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Peace Memorial Museum, students gained a deeper understanding of the atomic bombing, its impact on the people of Hiroshima, and the importance of working toward a more peaceful world.
The trip also included a visit to Miyajima Island, where students traveled by ferry, explored local shops, hiked Mt. Misen, and visited the famous Itsukushima Shrine and iconic Otorii Gate. Along the way, they experienced another important part of Japan's history and culture while enjoying some spectacular scenery.
On our final day, students took a walk around Hiroshima Castle and enjoyed a relaxed morning together, eating some delicious, freshly baked bread by the water while reflecting on everything they had learned throughout the trip.
We are incredibly proud of our Grade 8 students. They represented UST with maturity, respect, curiosity, and empathy, and embraced every opportunity to learn from the people, places, and history around them.
Residential trips are about much more than travel - they are opportunities for students to connect classroom learning to real-world experiences, build independence, strengthen friendships, and create lasting memories.
