Hello - so how does one get trained in watch repair in this country?
David Lucas
I’ve had an awesome weekend at the New Zealand Horological Institute Conference and AGM in Rotorua. I really enjoyed meeting my fellow watch and clockmakers from around the country. I also really enjoyed buying all of these parts and tools at the auction!
I am very hopeful that I can find someone who might be willing to help me please? I have a number of old analogue moving coil meters that need attention from someone who is competent to deal with things like hair springs and precision pivots. These meters stick in their travels which, to me, sounds like a problem with the pivots.

Can someone help me with the repair of these please? I can be contacted at:

Thank you, in advance.

Hi there, I have this railway double sided clock, electric. Its running fast and need someone to fix it. Tried a watchmaker, but apparently because its electric, he's not allowed to fix it. He suggested an electrician, but I can't find one that knows anything about clocks. We are in Northland. Any suggestions please?

Hi everyone! I'm just wondering if there are any watchmaking courses within New Zealand. I have gotten interested in the subject and wanted to start learning about movements and basic repairs. I have seen the online timezone courses, which look great, but wondered if there was a local version. Thanks!
Greetings,

My name is Gerard Morris. I live in Christchurch. I am writing a book about the history of timekeeping in New Zealand and need photos of NZ's early clock makers who kept the country on time from about 1840 to 1868. I have images of Arthur Beverly (Dunedin) and Alfred Bartlett (Auckland), but I'm still looking for Joseph McGregor and Alexander Mackay (both Wellington), John Hurst (Christchurch), George Young (Dunedin), James Reid (Dunedin/Invercargill) and George Lumsden (Invercargill). Can anyone help me source photos? Thanks
Gerard

The NZHI is proud to show off its new specialised training facility for apprentices. It's been years in the making but we're finally there and the first course is being planned as we speak.

Tips on spotting a fake Rolex/Tudor
This is a very good fake and would easily fool even good watchmakers (it had me fooled!). It was the correct dimensions and weight and even had a highly finished ETA movement as you'd expect to find in this model Tudor
The give-away signs:
First the case number & case back number don't match each other. They should always be the same
Second was the case clamp. It's just stamped out and hasn't been finished. You'll see burs all around the edges.
And the third giveaway was the finish on the inside of the lugs and around the inside of the case tube, which again wasn't up to standard. You'll see the spring bar hole is wonky, there is a bur in the corner and even a small section filed out of the bottom edge of the lug. Definitely not a Rolex finish.
Not an easy one to pick but dose highlight the fact that high quality fakes are out there. So be careful. Our customer brought this off the internet and thought it was real!
The moral of the story is don't buy a high end watch off the internet...
