Vision is our dominant sense— it feeds directly into our thinking and feeling. Scrolling, swiping, tapping, we look at endless streams of images. But when was the last time you really stopped to see?

In this 8-week class, you’ll learn how drawing can open the door to a calmer, more connected way of seeing the world. By practicing simple strategies for quieting the mind and focusing attention, we’ll play with easing into and enjoying the experience of drawing. At the end of the course you’ll have the foundation for your own practice of cultivating awareness and delighting in the wonder of the world. (We won’t worry about making “nice looking” or realistic finished pieces.) I’ll provide simple tools (paper, pencils) and walk with you each step of the way.

Please know that no “talent” is required! You liked drawing when you were little and you can fall in love with it again—no matter your recent experience.

“Art is the highest form of hope,” was a sentiment first expressed by German painter, Gerhard Richter, highlighting art’s ability to provide solace and comfort to humanity. Art speaks to us. But how do we listen? How do we have a conversation with it, about it? How do we experience its promise of hope? In this 8-week art appreciation course you’ll learn to enjoy and understand the language of art.

Through a mix of lectures and hands-on activities we will explore topics including:

- Why people make art

- The relationship between artist and audience

- How to approach the meaning of art

- Themes of art as seen through Art History.

Throughout the class, you will also learn about the vocabulary, methods, and materials used by artists. We will practicing looking art to help you get the most out of your visits to museums and galleries. You’ll also learn skills to confidently talk about art. You’ll leave the course feeling better equipped to richly experience, contemplate, and discuss the art you encounter at museums, galleries, and beyond!

No previous art experience is required for this course, just a curious mind and an enjoyment of the visual world! This art appreciation class is for anyone who wants to enjoy looking at art more.
