Here is my latest distraction/education bag haul from the dollar spot 🙌🏼 Many of these items are also great for families to create a ON THE GO for long doctor waits, unexpected trips to urgent care or Emergency Department or just for road trips! It’s a emergency kid for PLAY! While I love giving kids any opportunity for control, as a parent I also like putting together these kids without my own kids knowledge so that it’s novel and the distraction potential is off the charts when it comes time to really needing it. But you can certainly also have your child pick items they want in their distraction/coping kit for scheduled waits/procedures. I just like the pleasant surprise for those unpleasant unexpected surprise waits and medical experiences, too ☺️

We love incorporating medical items into play to desensitize them when seeing medical items in their medical cares, while also providing a sense of control and mastery over their personal medical experiences.
And a cart "Macy's Day Parade" down the halls before Thanksgiving?! What a fun idea to bring entertainment, distraction and joy to children at a time when playrooms are closed due to the pandemic.

This book is just as good as it is for kids (8-12 years older) as it is for any adult that picks it up to teach or give a refresher course on anxiety management strategies.
Source credit: Featured in an episode of Life Kit: Parenting podcast.
The book provides basic, common scenarios that elicit anxiety and offer worksheets and exercises how to work through it. I really enjoyed how they included the science behind fear and anxiety and how it actually is good. It empowers us to get through life’s tough stuff and immediate dangers to our safety!
The acronyms and jargon is heavy, but it didn’t particularly bother me. The exercises and recaps at the end of the chapter help review information given. I would agree with the authors that it certainly doesn’t replace therapy or that it would speak to an older child or teen facing a serious illness, coming out, violence, assault or deportation, like one reviewer noted (Barnes and Noble).
All in all, I think it offers a lot of great exercises and science behind our brain (and heart) around the topic of anxiety and could be helpful to older kids and adults (teens might find the language or case studies “cheesy” at times).
