August marks FIVE YEARS since we opened the doors to Common Ground Martial Arts in Wilkes County.... And we are incredibly grateful.

You've trusted us with your kids. Maybe you yourself walked through the doors and tried something new. You've shown up for events, fundraisers, tournaments and each other.

From the beginning, our goal was to teach quality martial arts AND to provide a space where people feel they belong.

We are incredibly proud of the martial artists we've helped develop -- but we are even more proud of the community that's grown.

So to every student, parents, friend, instructor, local business owner and person who has supported us over the last 5 years:

Happy Friday! We are back with another introduction video.

Today is all about our greatest cheerleader - Jo Kyo Nim Jennifer Taylor (Co-Owner and Business Development Director)

Jo Kyo Nim has not only dedicated her life to martial arts, but also helping people. Through her career path as a massage therapist (and teacher), vet tech, veterinary manager and RBT, she has constantly stood up for what was right and has made what was said to be impossible possible in all of her careers... Even when the hate was louder than the love.

She demonstrates what it means to have true integrity -- a core value for us at Common Ground! We are so incredibly grateful for her!

Today we discuss why we wear uniforms! Everyone's take on uniforms or not uniforms is fairly different. To us, a uniform is more than just an article of clothing. It's a teaching tool. It's a physical representation of perseverance. And, to be honest, they look cool. 😂

"Oh... I wasn't sad. I just needed to train." 😂🥋

We joke... But there is a little truth behind it.

We all know that physical activity is good for our body AND our mental health. But we think there's another piece that matters just as much: community.

Having a place where you belong. People who notice when you walk through the door. Friends to laugh with, train with, and grow alongside.

Mental health matters to us. That's one of the reasons we work so hard to make Common Ground more than just a place to learn martial arts!

Sometimes you need to move your body. Sometimes you need to be around your people. And sometimes... You just need to train. 💚🥋
