My heart goes out to the people of Nepal 🇳🇵❤️. Sending strength and comfort to everyone affected by devastating floods.

A glacier collapsed. Minutes later, a wall of water came rushing down causing fatalities and huge damage to infrastructure 🧊🌊

The devastating flooding in Nepal is another reminder of how vulnerable the Himalayas are to a warming climate.

As temperatures rise, glaciers retreat, ice thins, and mountain slopes can become increasingly unstable. But scientists are still investigating exactly what triggered this particular collapse, so it’s too early to blame climate change as the sole cause.

What happens high in the mountains doesn’t always stay there. The consequences can travel for miles downstream.

Why would a zebra stallion attack a foal? 🦓😳

It’s one of the harsher behaviors seen in the wild.

Male zebras may sometimes attack or kill foals that are not their own. This behavior, known as infanticide, can occur when a new stallion takes control of a group of females.

By eliminating another male’s offspring, the stallion may cause the mother to become reproductively receptive sooner, increasing his opportunity to father her next foal.

But mothers don’t simply stand by. A mare may aggressively defend her foal—kicking, biting, blocking and putting herself between the stallion and her baby.

Nature can be beautiful, but it can also be brutal.

How many safari vehicles are too many? 👀🐆

Seeing a leopard in the wild is a rare and exciting moment, so naturally everyone wants a closer look.

But when several vehicles surround one animal, you have to wonder—when does watching wildlife become disturbing wildlife?

This leopard appeared calm and unbothered, with no obvious signs of stress, but eventually moved away after a few minutes.

Wildlife tourism gives us incredible access—but it also comes with responsibility.

Where should we draw the line between a great safari experience and respecting an animal’s space? 🐆🌿

This is the Marabou stork—one of Africa’s largest and most important scavenging birds. 🪽

That huge pink pouch hanging from its neck isn’t used to store food. It’s called a gular sac, and it plays a role in display, communication and thermoregulation.

Marabou storks can stand around 1.5 m (5 ft) tall, with a wingspan approaching 3 m (10 ft).

But their real importance is what they eat.

Marabou storks feed heavily on carrion, often joining vultures around animal carcasses. They also eat fish, frogs, insects, reptiles, eggs and other small animals.

By consuming carcasses and other organic matter, scavengers help remove decaying material and return nutrients to the ecosystem. They occupy an important place in the food web—essentially functioning as part of nature’s cleanup crew. ♻️🌍

They may not win everyone’s beauty contest 😂, but an ecosystem without scavengers like these would lose an important part of its natural recycling system.
