🚧 Current Session Update at the National Park/Alcatraz Island Field Training Program 🚧

Our current session at Alcatraz continues, and our participants are gearing up for some exciting projects ahead. They're not just learning about construction—they're living it!

📜 Preparation and Certification
Participants have completed their telehandler & forklift certifications, an essential credential that enhances their capability to operate heavy-lifting equipment safely. This certification is just the beginning of their hands-on education, preparing them for the complexities of real-world construction environments.

🌅 Early Morning Operations
The day starts early for our trainees, with the barge arriving well before dawn to deliver materials and equipment for upcoming projects on Alcatraz Island. This operation is not just about logistics; it's a lesson in precision and planning, essential skills for any construction career. Coordinating the barge's arrival and the careful unloading of resources are critical tasks that mirror the everyday challenges faced on construction sites across the country.

🏗️ Skills in Action
These early morning operations allow participants to apply their newly acquired planning and logistics skills in real time. Each participant plays a role in ensuring that materials are not only delivered but also handled safely and efficiently and stored appropriately, ready for upcoming projects. This kind of experience is invaluable, teaching the nuances of supply chain management and on-site coordination, which is essential for any successful construction project.

The harsh, salty environment of Alcatraz Island is caustic to traditional rebar, causing even the best concrete craftsmanship to suffer short lifespans. This is an ideal location to choose ! From the precast panels, to the poured in place posts and top cap, none of the reinforcing utilized for these types of projects is subject to corrosion, enabling a much greater lifespan, and ultimately a much lower carbon footprint.

Huge shout out to Hilti for their continued support of CPI's programs for our country's transitioning military! We're undertaking a repointing project at historic Ft. Point that's outside the scope of what we're tooled up for, and the Hilti team came through with a donation of the specific tools to get the job done right! (Only a few of the tools are shown in this picture.)

And just like that, it's pour day! After building unique forms to match the historic railing panels of Alcatraz Island, our cohort of trainees installed and reinforcement and are now gaining hands-on experience in placing and finishing concrete - not an easy task with the amount of detail built into each panel. Later in the session, the panels will be transported to Alcatraz to be installed and integrated with cast-in-place posts and handrails by the team!

On this 81st anniversary, we're honored and humbled to have called Pearl Harbor National Memorial home for the first 4 years of our DoD-SkillBridge program's existence. We're also reminded of the ongoing work needed to repair Battleship Row's historic mooring quays to ensure these monuments are preserved for generations to come.

This team of transitioning service members are getting it done! These precast panels feature non-corrosive reinforcement and an exposed aggregate finish matching the historic panels being replaced. Once cured, they will be transported to Alcatraz for installation later in the session, providing safe access to staff and visitors.

This session's group of transitioning service members are already gaining meaningful hands-on skills and experience to propel them into promising careers in the greater construction industry! From learning how to use basic power tools to being ready for their first concrete pour in record time, the team has gotten the job done: 2 types of precast concrete panels have been built, rebar has been tied & installed, concrete volume has been calculated and mud with the appropriate mix design has been ordered. One completed and cured, these panels will be shipped & installed on Alcatraz Island later in the session.

Our Fall cohort of transitioning military service members will be gaining hands-on training, skills & experience as they complete a concrete stabilization project on an iconic San Francisco building - and the building happens to be located on the edge of a cliff... We'd like to give a HUGE shout out to 3M's Fall Protection team for providing an individualized training session for the team, helping to inform, educate and prepare the them to get the job done safely!

Our fall cohort's first day on Alcatraz Island wasn't just a photo opportunity. This group of transitioning military service members got a front row seat to witness what the harsh, salty environment does to traditionally reinforced concrete as they toured the island. They also saw improvements other service members made to this historic place while those previous participants prepared for civilian careers in the construction industry! A bonus was having an opportunity to meet and talk with an industry professional (and previous service member) from Turner Construction Company, who joined us for the day!
