One of my favorite parts of teaching on Outschool is getting to meet incredible learners from all over the world, without ever leaving home. Every day brings new conversations, different perspectives, lots of laughs, and sometimes even surprise visits from students’ pets! 🐶🐱

I love having the flexibility to create my own schedule while doing what I love most: helping students build confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning. ❤️📚🔬

These little behind-the-scenes moments are what make teaching online so special.

🧪 Science doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

One of the biggest struggles students face in middle school science is not the content itself… it’s the SKILLS behind it.

In this class, students learn essential science skills like:
📊 Reading & analyzing graphs
🧫 Lab safety & scientific thinking
📝 CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) writing
📈 Data interpretation
🔬 Variables, experiments, and observations
📚 Science vocabulary & literacy skills

These are the foundational skills students need to feel confident in ANY science class — biology, chemistry, earth science, physical science, and beyond!

As a science teacher and reading specialist, I focus on helping students actually understand HOW to think like scientists, not just memorize facts. 💡

Perfect for:
✔️ Middle school students
✔️ Homeschool learners
✔️ Students needing extra support/confidence
✔️ Students preparing for advanced science classes
✔️ Learners who struggle with graphs, labs, or science writing

When I have converstations with students about why they didn't do well on the test in my class or other classes, the most frequent response is either they didn't study at all 🙈, or they said, "I studied, I looked over my notes!"

While looking over notes can be helpful, often if gives students a sense of false confidence and makes them think they know more then they do because they're reading it and all the information is there. Covering up the notes and doing practice questions or summarizing the content to a friend is a much better way to find out what they really need to review, and what can be skipped because they already know it.

Helping students grow in confidence and skills is always the goal, so hearing that it’s making a real impact means everything. I’m so thankful for families who trust me with their child’s learning journey!

So many struggling readers know their letter sounds… but still get stuck when words get longer. That’s not a motivation issue, it’s a missing piece of instruction.

In this session, we focused on breaking words into syllables and actually reading them out loud. Because sounds don’t always behave the same when they’re “sandwiched” inside bigger words.

Students need to see:
• how vowels can shift
• how syllable types change pronunciation
• how to chunk instead of guess

Reading aloud + syllable breakdown = confidence, accuracy, and real progress.

If a reader is stuck, pin point exactly what they’re struggling with and go deeper into how words really work. That’s where the breakthrough happens!

✨ One of my favorite parts of teaching on Outschool?
The pause button.

In this 1:1 reading session, we stop whenever the learner needs to ask a question, make a connection, or have an “aha!” moment. No rushing. No pressure. Just real-time thinking, talking, and growing as a reader. 📖💛

This is what learning looks like when it’s flexible, personalized, and built around the student, especially as families reset and choose classes for the new semester.

🎯 Class featured: 1:1 Becoming a Better Reader on Outschool

Perfect for learners who benefit from discussion, guided practice, and the freedom to slow down when it matters most.

The second half of this series focuses on the behind-the-scenes factors that truly shape a school experience. 💛

We dive into how curriculum is chosen and why research-based programs matter, what teacher pay and working conditions can tell you about a school’s health, and why staff turnover is such an important red flag to watch for.

You will also learn what questions to ask about special education services, caseloads, and support systems so you can advocate for your child if extra help is ever needed. We talk about faith-based and themed programs, including how instructional time is used and what that means for academic learning.

Finally, we end with an important reminder: you are not stuck. You have options, and it is okay to change course if a school is not the right fit.

This information is here to help you feel informed, empowered, and confident in your choices. Save this post for later and share it with another parent who might need it.
