Dyslexia is the most common learning disability and makes up an estimated 80% of all learning disabilities.
Having dyslexia is hard.
Trying to get some people to see that dyslexia is real and to raise awareness is hard.
Getting the appropriate support and having our accommodations met can be a battle.
So you can only imagine how difficult it must be to have a learning difference that most people have never even heard of!
I also have dysgraphia, and believe me, there are very few people who have even heard of this, let alone know what this is!
This table from Understood gives a little bit more information on some other learning differences that we might not know much about.
Dys means ‘difficulty with’ so (very basically):
dyslexia means to have difficulty with reading;
dysgraphia is difficulty with writing;
dyscalculia is difficulty with maths;
and dyspraxia is difficulty with movement.
So let’s all try to find out a little bit more, because after all, how can we expect others to know more about dyslexia if we aren’t willing to know more about other learning differences!
And, just like dyslexia, these other learning differences all have lots of unique strengths and challenges that most people are unaware of.
That’s the end of today’s lesson 😊
