GET TO KNOW YOUR LECTURER!
Architecture is more than the design of buildings—it is about shaping the way people live, learn, work, and thrive. For Mubanga K. Chisha, an architecture lecturer at The University College of Ndola UNICON, which is one of the 3 Universities that offer architecture in Zambia, says architecture represents the perfect balance of creativity, technical excellence, and social impact.
Mr. Chisha who is also the head of Architecture Department earned his Bachelor of Architecture from The Copperbelt University in 2006 before advancing his expertise with a Master of Engineering in Project Management from Mulungushi University in 2023.
With over 19 years of professional experience in architecture, project management, infrastructure development, and construction supervision, Mr. Chisha brings a wealth of practical knowledge into the classroom. His career has spanned both the public and private sectors, where he has successfully led multidisciplinary teams and delivered complex projects in healthcare, mining, housing, and institutional development. This breadth of experience enables students to learn not only architectural theory but also the realities of professional practice.
His professional portfolio includes the planning, design, and management of numerous landmark projects across Zambia. Among these are the design and construction of the Tuberculosis Research and Treatment Centre at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, an 18-metre girder bridge over the Kafubu River in Lufwanyama for Kagem Mining Limited, and housing and infrastructure developments in Mwansabombwe.
These projects reflect his ability to deliver complex developments from concept through construction while coordinating architects, engineers, contractors, and stakeholders.
Although beginning his formal career in university teaching, Mr. Chisha has spent many years mentoring engineers, technicians, artisans, and construction professionals. His teaching philosophy is rooted in connecting academic learning with industry practice, ensuring that graduates leave the classroom equipped with the technical competence, professional ethics, and confidence required to excel in the workplace.
His classes challenge students to think critically, design responsibly, and approach architecture as a profession dedicated to solving real-world problems. Students are provided with a range of career prospects like Architectural design and consultancy, Urban and regional planning, Building Information Modelling (BIM), to mention but a few.
Looking ahead, Mr. Chisha sees enormous opportunities for architecture in Zambia. Rapid urbanisation, growing infrastructure investment, and increasing demand for sustainable housing, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and public infrastructure require architects who are innovative, technologically skilled, and socially responsible.
He believes the future of the profession lies in sustainable design, smart construction technologies, the effective use of local materials, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
At the Department of Architecture, students benefit from learning under experienced professionals who have shaped real projects and solved real challenges. the University is committed to producing graduates who are not only technically competent but also innovative, ethical, and prepared to lead the future of the built environment.
