Hanson Ranch Dino-dig, Wyoming
20/05/2025
A very warm welcome to our brand new NAFOS page. The page may be new, but the people involved in this Forum certainly are not ‘new’ to the field of origins. In August 2024, our collective goal culminated in uniting individuals from diverse educational backgrounds to establish The National Forum for Origin Science where we critically evaluate existing theories of origins through a Biblical and scientific lens.

Have you ever heart about Taphonomy? Well, this is the study of the processes (such as burial and preservation) that affected plant and animal remains before they fossilized. It’s almost like CSI – Crime Scene Investigation for fossils.
Professor Art Chadwick (Research Professor of Biology and Geology and co-Director of the Dinosaur Science Museum and Research Center at Southwestern Adventist Universit) has been researching this topic for over 20 years at the Hanson Ranch in Wyoming. He is a leading expert in his field and has even worked with National Geographic to analyze dinosaur fossils (Anasaur bones) found on-site.
The Hanson Ranch belongs to two sisters, whose father discovered amongst other, dinosaur bones many years ago. He understood the truth of Biblical Creation and, in 1996, opened the area for qualified creation researchers to study.
Over the years and during the month of June, Prof Chadwick has been leading a team of scientists, students, and volunteers from around the world to the Hanson Ranch for fossil excavations; and this year, I’ve been invited to participate!
The goal/objective of this long-term research project is to determine a few things:
- What caused the dinosaurs' deaths?
- What were they doing at the moment they died?
- What happened after they died? Did they start decomposing, or were they immediately buried?
- What happened after burial that allowed their bones to be preserved?
What has been discovered?
Over a period of about 20 years, various fossils have been discovered including snails, sharks, stingrays, crocodiles, turtles, mammal teeth and bird bones - and yes, they were discovered in the same layer as the dinosaur bones! And there are a lot! In fact about 10,000 to 25,000 individual dinosaurs, including Triceratops, T-rex, Nanotyrannus and Dromaeosaurs (raptors) have been discovered. However 95% of the bones belong to just one species – Hadrosaurs (the duck-billed dinosaurs) called Edmontosaurus annectens. Similar hadrosaur-dominated fossil beds have also been found in Canada, Alaska, and Russia.
The disarticulated, tithtly packed bones are preserved in a single one-meter-thick mudstone layer (in the Lance Formation) over an estimated area of about 40 hectares with over a million dinosaur bones!
An astonishing discovery!
In this innovative project, high-precision GPS devices are used to record each fossils’ location, orientation, and position within the rock layers. Each fossil is photographed and digitally mapped in the laboratory (world-class 3D software is used to model the fossils' distribution). GIS is used to reconstruct the quarries in 3-dimensions. Now this is where it gets really interesting!
With over 20 years of data collection, the model revealed that, although the bones are bundled together, they are clearly sorted vertically, with larger bones (such as femur bones) at the bottom and increasingly smaller bones stacked on top.
Also, the bones show no signs of weathering or abrasion. They are clean and well-preserved. Furthermore, no juvenile or immature bones have been found. Interestingly this is the same in other bonebeds containing Hadrosaurs. It has been suggested that this represented a herd before the breeding season.
Why is this important? Because it simply doesn’t match a slow, gradual burial but rather, it strongly supports a sudden, massive event. What could have caused this mass burial? The only logical explanation for the hydro-sorting of over a million dinosaur bones to be buried over an estimated 40 hectares in a single yet vertically sorted layer is a catastrophic, global Flood that buried them all at once.
“These animals had to die and then their carcasses had to have time to rot. So we’re talking days or weeks or months during which time the bones and tissue were either eaten away or rotted away. And then the bones that remained were deposited instantaneously in this environment because they’re in a graded bed with big bones at the bottom and little bones at the top, and you can see that here. The big bones are all down at the bottom. When they start digging up here, they start to find smaller bones. So that condition requires a sorting process that can only take place during a catastrophic emplacement.”
“The only way I know how you could develop a graded bed is if you had a catastrophic process that transported these bones and laid them all in as a single event.” – Prof Art Chadwick
Have a look at this video by Genesis Apologetics as well the article below to learn more about this innovative project which clearly supports the Global Biblical Flood.
The Bonebed Mystery at Hanson Ranch The Hanson Ranch Bonebed contains fossils from thousands of dinosaurs. Could this site have something to do with a global Flood?
