Don't be thinking Methanol poisoning is just a South East Asia thing.
We did a cruise in December last year, we cruised out of Galveston Texas and headed to Mexico and Honduras.
In the port of Cozumel, Mexico, nearly every shop, regardless of if the sold t shirts, hair cuts or booze offered free Tequila shots. I mean every shop.
There were 3 cruise ships in Port that day, our ship had 7000 passengers, the other two were slightly smaller but similar.
That's 15 to 20 thousand people walking past these shops getting offered free shots. I bet the cruise industry has plenty of methanol casualties.
Ya gotta have ya game face on when you travel anywhere.

These legends are building an international Methanol Awareness Campaign. It shouldn't have to exist but here we are anyway.

So tell me again just how good that cocktail was?
It's pretty obvious that drinking differently when your overseas cramps ya fun. You normally drink vodka at home and that's what you feel like. What if you knew without question that the vodka you were about to drink was fake, tainted, mixed with methanol for extra kick and was about to make you permanently blind and without treatment will kill you? Did you still want that vodka, maybe a double?
The chance of you getting methanol poisoning is very small, very small, but never zero. You don't know where the bar got its spirits from, how much they paid and if it's legit or fake.
Here is the safe way to drink in Bali, Thailand or South East Asia in general.
1, Take duty free and ration it
2, Drink beers.
3, Drink single serve premixed bottles or cans.
4, Drink cider.
5, Drink wine.
The other possibility is go blind, have organ failure or die.
How good does vodka taste all of a sudden.

So according to the University of New South Wales, Melbourne also now has a problem with vodka being sold in bottle shops containing Methanol and micro plastics. This is the gift that just keeps on giving.

A preliminary investigation of licensed retailers in Melbourne has confirmed that illicit bottles of vodka are being sold – often at a cheaper price point than competitor products – in breach of food safety, liquor and tax regulations.

A new study from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at UNSW and the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University showed the bottles contained plastic contaminants and methanol, which, when ingested at sufficient levels, can be toxic.

The researchers say their findings demonstrate an urgent need to establish how prevalent illicit alcohol products are in Australia – and move towards a proactive policy approach to the safety of alcohol products.

After over a decade of telling people about safe drinking and the possibility of Methanol Poisoning when you travel, I still get the she'll be right mates, the my friend owns the bar and he wouldn't do me wrong. The business owners that kick back calling bu****it. The nah, that doesn't happen its all an anti Bali thing.

Remember, I don't make a single cent in trying to help you. I have zero skin in any financial game selling anything. I don't own a bar, a beach bar or restaurant
Can the person you got your info off say the same?

What can you drink that will guarantee you won't get methanol poisoning?
Duty Free
All and any beers and radlers.
Premixed single serves stubbies or cans.
Seltzers.
Ciders
Wine and champers.

Update, NIKKI HAS BEEN FOUND. SHE IS IN HOSPITAL.
This is most likely nothing to do with drinking spirits in Bali, but this lady is missing in Bali.
If anyone has seen her, was in the same venue or knows anything, please reach out.
Message me, or the original family member that posted for help in finding her. They are worried sick.

Well that was funny moment, i was laying in bed, flicking through reels. This came up, low a behold it was about me, lol
I have to correct one point, i never said the bottles were refilled with methanol, thats just not correct. They are often refilled with local spirits as sold as imported legit spirits.
There are 7 million visitors anually that head to Bali, cases of methanol poisoning are pretty unusual, but guess what cases still happen.

UPDATE, nearly half a million views in under 2 weeks.
That's insane.
I am absolutely humbled here. I posted this post about duty free bottles on Monday night 12th April, it's now Thursday arvo on the 16th and it has been viewed over 352 thousand times in just 4 days. This is amazing.

Another Bali trip done, another round of duty free bottles trashed so refilling if just that little bit harder.
Once you have finished you bottle, trash the label, wreck the lid and make it harder for people to sell your bottle as one that will get refilled with local spirits and passed off as imported duty free spirits and sold in venues.
I was sent a video yesterday of bottle being refilled with a festy old funnel and clear liquid be poured out of what looked like an old vegetable oil bottle. Not cool.
Do your bit, trash the label and top. I wouldn't advice smashing it unless it can be done safely for you and the hotel staff.

Ladies, Please be aware of your surroundings and who you are drinking with. There are predatory individuals at bars/clubs that could take advantage. Stay with your friends and never leave anyone behind. This happens all over the World, not just Bali as we know. Take care of each other. You’re there to have a wonderful holiday. Be careful please ❤️
