The Śiṣya

The Śiṣya The Śiṣya is a Burning Man 2016 art piece about transformation and loss designed and built by Krista Sanders (Friendlandia) and Rob Bell (Zonotopia)

The Śiṣya (pronounced Shi-shya) is an experiential art installation being constructed for Burning Man 2016. The piece is intended to remind us that personal transformation is not only possible, but necessary, especially in times of great loss. "Śiṣya" is sanskrit for student. The notion that loss can be a teacher, guiding us toward a deeper awareness of Self and igniting within us some of our greatest Gifts, is both empowering and humbling. The path to understanding such a concept is deeply personal. In building The Śiṣya, we hope to create an experience where people can start to awaken to what this belief might have to offer them. Winding through the structure, people will be encouraged to write their stories of transformation on the walls, leaving them behind to inspire others. At the end of the week, The Śiṣya will be burned to memorialize the release of all our collected stories.
