The “-ed” ending in regular English verbs actually has three different pronunciations. It depends on the last sound of the base verb, not just the letter.
1. Pronounced as /t/
Use /t/ when the verb ends in a voiceless sound (like p, k, f, s, sh, ch, x).
Examples:
worked → /wɜrkt/
washed → /wɒʃt/
liked → /laɪkt/
👉 Think: no vibration in your throat.
2. Pronounced as /d/
Use /d/ when the verb ends in a voiced sound (like vowels, b, g, v, z, m, n, l, r, etc.).
Examples:
played → /pleɪd/
cleaned → /kliːnd/
lived → /lɪvd/
👉 Think: your throat vibrates.
3. Pronounced as /ɪd/ (or /əd/)
Use /ɪd/ when the verb ends in t or d.
Examples:
wanted → /ˈwɒntɪd/
needed → /ˈniːdɪd/
👉 This adds an extra syllable.
Quick trick to remember:
t sound → /t/
