Do YOU know your collagen? ⚠️ Long Post Warning! ⚠️
I’ve been seeing WAY too much misinformation on this topic everywhere I turn, so it’s time to set the record straight with actual SCIENCE.
But before I get stuck in, there’s a few things that you should take note:
🧁 Collagen is like the sprinkles on the icing on the cake - it’s not the be-all-and-end-all but it can make a significant difference to your skin when you improve your nutrition overall, exercise, and include adaptogens that support liver function (that can be seen in the visible results of your skin)
⚡️ We naturally produce collagen proteins in our body, but our production starts to decline around 25, with the results showing up in our 30’s and beyond.
On the outside, it shows up as fine lines, sagging skin, wrinkles.
On the inside, it shows up as joint discomfort, mobility and flexibility.
So here is Dani-the-Dietitian’s 101 on collagen:
1️⃣ Marine collagen - rich in Type 1 collagen fibres, which is the major form of collagen in the top layer of our skin, as well as bone, tendons and connective tissue.
PROS: It's viewed as the most superior source of collagen for increasing the body’s overall Type 1 collagen, which improved hair, skin, nail and bone quality in well-executed studies. It’s thought to be absorbed 1.5 times more efficiently than other sources of collagen. It also contains the same type of collagen found in skin, which makes it the best form to support your skin and improve its appearance. When sourced responsibly, it’s one of the best “up-cycled” stories of all time, as it’s made from a by-product of what would usually be a waste product of the fishing industry. Marine collagen peptides are the lowest molecular weight and are absorbed and utilitised efficiently by the body.
CONS: as one of the highest quality collagen peptides around, it tends to be the most expensive; it’s also unsuitable for people with fish allergies.
2️⃣ Bovine & Porcine - contains Type 1, 2 & 3 collagen, and can support bone and joint health.
PROS: Both sources more readily accessible and are often a cheaper alternative to Marine Collagen. While both sources contain Type 3 collagen to support muscle fibres and organs, Bovine also contains Type 1 collagen for your hair, skin and nails. At the same time, Bovine Collagen provides Type 2 collagen for joint health
CONS: They aren’t as efficient as marine collagen and should also be sourced from free-range cows and pigs that aren’t treated with hormones, which does raise the price as a result.
3️⃣ Chicken: predominantly Type 2 collagen
PROS: Unlike the other collagen sources, Chicken Collagen is said to be the most effective for supporting cartilage in the body and is also said to reduce pain associated with arthritis.
CONS: While it does support joints and cartilage, it is not known for skin health or reducing the signs of ageing
Note: Each source of collagen has its place when it comes to supplements, but marine collagen gets my vote when it comes to fast and effective absorption and visible effects on our skin health, with knock-on benefits seen in joint health, too.
4️⃣ According to the latest research, studies show that 4-5g (4000-5000mg) is a clinically effective dose, with at least 2-3g (2000-3000mg) at a minimum to see results
5️⃣ Additional ingredients:
⚠️ Hyaluronic Acid (HA): unnecessary if the amount, form and dose of collagen is on point
⚠️ Chondroitin Sulphate is clinically effective in joint health formulas but irrelevant in terms of skin health and structure
✅ vitamin C & zinc: required as “tools” for building healthy cells
6️⃣ Packaging: Collagen peptides are highly susceptible to oxidation from oxygen in the air, UV light and some plastics that they are contained in, so they should be delivered in single-use, coloured glass vials to ensure that what's on the label is actually what you get.
The liquid collagen that I choose to use:
✅ delivers responsibly & ethically sourced marine collagen peptides that have shown remarkable results in 30 days (I would even argue as early as 7 days for some people)
✅ is screened for heavy metals to make sure that it’s only the collagen that makes it’s way into the bottles
✅ is sealed in individual recyclable glass bottles and sealed within 0.15 seconds to ensure that there is zero oxidation to the collagen peptides during processing. Individual bottles means that you get exactly the same amount of collagen every time you open the bottle, and no need for preservatives of any kind.
✅ delivers vitamin C, zinc, biotin and other nutrients in an all-natural strawberry cherry-burst deliciousness luxe 50ml shot.
(I get excited to “face” the mornings now... hehe. Promise that's my one and only Mum joke for the day.)
I'm already noticing the difference in my skin and looking forward to seeing how it might help with some stiffness in my back, neck, knees and hips from years of battering with dancing and running.
Watch this 'face' hehe, I mean space 😍 (OK, one more.)
