PERSON BEHIND CANCER #5
My nephew was diagnosed with cancer when he was 10 years old, he was this bright and bubbly boy who loved watching cartoon and play video games. When we were growing up, it was always me and my nephew against my brothers and cousins, he was more like my little brother than my nephew. My aunty would always spoil us by taking us out late at night just to go eat maccas. He had been fighting cancer for a year and a half and in the beginning of 2017, we had found out that he had beat cancers butt and was finally cancer free. We were all happy and over the moon because my nephew can finally go back to school.

Fast forward to the beginning of August 2017 and we got the news that his cancer was back and this time it was worse than before. Not even a month later after hearing the news about his cancer being back, my nephew had sadly lost his battle against cancer. Our superhero was finally resting and was no longer in pain. We had thought that my nephew had won the battle against cancer but I guess the lord needed him more than we did.

To be honest, losing someone so young due to cancer made me realise that anything can happen to you whether you’re old or young, healthy or unhealthy anything can happen and change your life in a matter of days, weeks or as in my case in less than a month. The passing of my nephew has also made me appreciate the people that are around me because like my nephew I didn’t know he’d be taken away from us so soon so it made me love and appreciate everyone more.

I will never forget you champ, you will always be our superhero. Thank you for always brightening up the room with your smile and for always being my superhero by sticking with us for 2 years. Before my nephew passed away, he had lived and fulfilled many of his dreams and he wouldn’t of been able to do this if it wasn’t for the cancer society. So I just want to thank you guys for everything that you guys have done for my nephew.

To everyone out there fighting cancer, you are strong, you are brave and you are beautiful. Keep on fighting, you’re not alone on this battle. Keep fighting and keep smiling 💛🎗

PERSON BEHIND CANCER #4
Meet my handsome baby cousin Solomone Haufano. Sadly his grandfather had past away from cancer, and not long after his grandfather’s death, his father had past away from cancer. Unfortunately it is something that runs in our genes and we don’t know what’s next but what I do know is that my baby cousin always remains positive. At only 4 years old, he has been through so many chemotherapy sessions. What was supposed to be a 12-13 hour surgery, turned out to only be 7 hours. When the doctors opened up his stomach, the remaining tumour from the last scan wasn’t there. He teaches me that there is so much value to life. To stand firm through any obstacles because with faith and prayer, you can get through anything. There is so many positives about my baby cousin in his journey although I wished I could be in his place to take all his pain away. So young and I could not imagine a mother’s pain through all of this. All us family do, is continue to fast and also stay strong for him. This family has such a strong faith towards god. He just turned 5 not long ago, and I pray that he’s blessed with so much more in life because he deserves beyond the best.

Well to begin my mum's a cancer survivor but recently I lost my 13-year-old cousin to it cancer.

My mum's cancer was obviously a big shock and I nor my family were prepared to face the challenges ahead. It was hard to watch my mum suffer in pain and not be able to do anything about it. She went through radiation and it was getting rid of the cancer, but it was destroying the rest of her body, so it made her miserable......and it made us miserable. Cancer is something that really drained my family and I. She didn’t lose her hair, but she slowly changes giving us the felt like giving up attitude, but my family knew she could fight it. Now a year and a half later my mum is cured fighting her battle against cancer.

I guess she was lucky it was curable, and I always thank god for that ❤️
But earlier this year my cousins wasn’t curable. She was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and it only got worse to the point where it was terminal, and we got the news that she would only have a certain amount of time to live. My cousin was the type of person who never wanted to disappoint people so during her cancer she acted as if she didn’t have it, she lived everyday like it was her last Until it was. On the 8th on August when she passed; my family was crushed especially my mum because she survived it at 45 and my cousin at 13 wasn’t given the chance which really affected us. She was only 13 and something as simple as having to many while blood cells affected her life.
My relationship with my mother has never been stronger because I now know that life is unpredictable and you must cherish the people you love because you never know when they will leave. This is also inclusive towards staying in the moment and looking at situations and people from an optimistic point of view. Chur 👍☺

It was my last year of intermediate.

My sister came home from her doctor's appointment, and a few days later the doctor called and told my parents to take her to the hospital immediately. My parents were nervous and scared, but I didn’t really think much of it. When we arrived at the hospital, we went to this room and waited there for a while. Then we moved to another room where we saw a nurse. They did a couple of tests on my sister and came back with the news that she had been diagnosed with leukemia.

I was just sitting on this sofa completely spaced out. My parents and my sister started crying and I could honestly feel their pain, but I wasn’t the type to show any emotions. Anyway, months went by and she began looking thinner and paler. She couldn’t eat certain types of food otherwise she’d vomit out water. It was heartbreaking seeing her go through it all. When she lost her long beautiful hair, some people began crying. Whenever she’d brush her hair, big chunks would come out with the hairbrush and she’d stare at it for a couple of seconds. I started being nicer to her, even though our relationship wasn’t one where we said, “I love you” and that stuff. But all that was on my mind was “I might lose her any day, so I got to love her before it’s too late,” you know? She was treated the same way by other family members. They were still nice to her.

I could see how she was in pain when she just looked at her hair. She thought she was ugly? But I thought she looked even more beautiful with no hair 🤫Months later she came out cancer free. My powerful sister beat it and I couldn’t be prouder of her 😌❣️

*THE PERSON BEHIND CANCER #1*

In April 2015, my mother discovered a lump on her breast. This occurred a week after the burial of her one and only sister, who died suddenly. The whirlwind was real. I remember feeling emotions that I had never experienced in my 20 years of life. I was in my last year of being an undergraduate at The University of Auckland, and felt that I could never recover from these two life changing experiences.

In May 2015, after countless appointments at Superclinic, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I remember being in the room during her breast screening, and when she had her biopsy. Being the youngest and unmarried, without kids, made me the perfect person to be with her during her appointments. It was a pleasure. It is not everyday that you get to watch firsthand, someone fight a battle that many people do not recover from.

In June 2015, my mother had a mastectomy where her left breast was removed. From then on came chemotherapy, radiation, and doses of herceptin. I watched the harmful reaction of these treatments. I could not believe that men and women who experienced cancer, had to go through this hardship.

3 years on, my mother has been clear of cancer. She fought long and hard, and was able to gain victory during this very tough life experience.

Cancer is a vicious disease that has gained many of my family members. The awareness is real and we must ensure that as citizens of society, we are aware of symptoms, and screenings. Although cancer is an experience that no one wants to undergo, the rebuilding of my mother’s strength has been a privilege to watch.

Manurewa Youth Council is calling out all organizations and/or vendors in our local community who are wanting to sell food at our upcoming event, Rewa Creatives. This event is a creative arts activation event held at Southmall on the 29th of September from 2-5pm which aims to provide our local rangatahi with the oppurtunity to showcase their creative talent.
