PRESS STATEMENT

NANS JCC DELTA STATE AXIS URGE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO INTERVENE IN ASUU STRIKE

The National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC) Delta state axis has called on the Federal Government to look into the plight of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to avert the indefinite strike.

It is saddened and regrettable that the leadership of NANS JCC Delta axis received the news of another indefinite strike by ASUU over the Federal Government’s indifference to their plight.

The educational sector of Nigeria is in a dilapidated state and the government has over the years neglect this vital sector that has a major role in human capital and nation development.

The break down in negotiations is a proof that political leaders don’t care about the future of Nigerian Students. The students would be forced to bear the brunt of the break down in the negotiation between the union and the government.

The demands of ASUU are reasonable and touch on the integrity of government,If the needs of ASUU is met, there will be a revamp in the educational sector.

We therefore call on the Federal Government to do all it can to get ASUU back to the classrooms as we are ready to storm the street if this issue is not addressed within the shortest time.

SAY NO TO DRUG ABUSE AS NANS JCC LED BY COMR. OTURU SOVEREIGNTY TAKE CAMPAIGN TO CAMPUSES

The alarming rate at which incidences of drug abuse had permeated the Nigeria society in recent time was worrisome. Hence the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee NANS JCC Delta Axis under the chairmanship of Comr. Oturu Sovereignty a medical student of Delta State University, Abraka, embarked on a campaign from Campus to Campus TAGGED: SAY NO TO DRUG ABUSE
The campaign is to raise the level of awareness of the inherent dangers in drug abuse and dissuade the students and youths who were the prime victims from the practice.
Comr. Sovereignty said that the campaign is also a way of presenting a united front against the menace which had eaten deep into the society, the trend called for caution and needed serious action from government and all stakeholders to nip in the bud the unhealthy practice. He noted that youth constituted the largest segment of the Nigerian population, and was considered the most vulnerable group to hard drugs and alcohol.
Speaking further “No one will be left out in this fight and we have come up with various strategies which will ensure that all our youths who are the most vulnerable are reached. “Their health and optimal development is critical to national development and deserves significant attention,”
While addressing some students at Delta State University Abraka, he noted that Drug abuse among students has a detrimental effect on academic performance. Young people are more susceptible to the short- and long-term cognitive effects of drug abuse while the social and emotional repercussions further increase risk factors for problems in school. Common effects of drug use on the brain that impact academic learning includes difficulty concentrating, inability to process information and problems with working memory. Students that use drugs may become a part of anti-social groups who are less likely to value education, structure and social propriety. Theft, cultism, cheating, dropping out and a general disregard for social norms are common behaviors bonding the members of these groups. The negative behaviors of this group mentality simultaneously create the desired sense of belonging while alienating oneself from the people who could help the most.
He concluded by calling on all relevant authorities to support this campaign as the drive is to save the future of the nation. The campaign will hit all campuses in Delta State and Secondary schools.

Comrade OTURU SOVEREIGNTY Chairman National Association of Nigerian Students/Joint Campus Committee (NANS/JCC) Join World Health Organization (WHO) on the Breast Cancer Awareness day

By
Comr. ESE Patrick

Breast cancer awareness is an effort to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education on symptoms and treatment. Greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.

During the campaign, Comr Oturu Sovereignty outline some of the risk factors associated with breast cancer which include Age, Genetics, history of breast lump or cancer, dense breast tissue, Estrogen exposure and breast-feeding, body weight, Alcohol consumption, radiation exposure, hormone treatment and use of oral birth Control pills. Talking about preventive measures, there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, but some lifestyle decisions can significantly reduce the risk of breast and other types of cancer. These include: avoiding excess alcohol consumption, a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, getting enough exercise, maintaining a healthy body mass index.

He advice breast Examination should be carried out frequently and if any lump is noticed, consult your Doctor immediately. He also plead with the Government to join hands in the campaign against breast cancer and support for those already diagnosed with breast cancer. Finally he Adviced the students present to avoid the reckless continuous use of oral contraceptives because it is a risk factor.
