National History Day in Missouri is a unique opportunity for students—in grades 6 to 12—to take charge and explore the past in a creative, hands-on way. While producing a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website, they become an expert on the topic of their choosing! National History Day in Missouri is the state affiliate of National History Day and is sponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri.

One of the best parts of NHD’s Welcome Ceremony (of which there are so many to choose from) is hearing from our guest speakers! Any ideas of who it could be this year?? 🎤

There are 40 monuments on the National Mall, but not a single one is dedicated to the history of American women. 's Suffrage National Monument Foundation is changing that and wants NHD students and teachers to help.

Through the Monumental Ideas campaign, students can submit design concepts and inspirations for the first-ever monument honoring the suffrage movement in our "National Front Yard." This is a great opportunity for students to help shape how history is memorialized!

is happy to announce that Mack Williams III from the St. Louis region has been nominated for the 2026 National History Day Teacher of the Year Award in the Senior Division for the state of Missouri. Results will be announced at the contest in June.

Mr. Williams teaches at Sumner High School. He shared: "Helping my students learn how to preserve our community's history and tell its stories has been one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life. I have been teaching the Museum Studies Pathway course at Sumner High School for four years, and have participated in NHD each year. Our involvement with NHD has not only increased student interest in history, it has exposed them to subjects and locations that have helped transition them from having a fear of failure to confidence that they belong in any and all spaces."

Congratulations, Mack!

is excited to announce that Kelly Patterson from the Cape Girardeau region has been nominated for the 2026 National History Day Teacher of the Year Award in the Junior Division for the state of Missouri. Results will be announced at the contest in June.

Mrs. Patterson teaches at Risco High. She states: "Being named the Missouri NHD Teacher of the Year for the Junior Division is so much more than an award. Just being recognized in this group with so many other amazing history educators from across the nation is an honor. History education has been a big part of my life since I was in elementary school, where I fell in love with competing in the National History Day Program as a 4th-grade student. Over roughly the past three decades of my life, I have been involved with this program in some way, shape, or form. From competing as a student in elementary, junior high, and senior high school to judging while attending college to now being an NHD teacher, my love of NHD runs deep. National History Day is a program where I get to show students that history is so much more than learning dates and facts. For many of my students, the program has allowed them to experience things that they would not have been able to do if it weren't for the program. It is my goal to continue to instill the love of history into the students who walk through my classroom doors, and one of the primary ways I do so is through National History Day."

Congratulations, Kelly!
