‼️Review of the RACE scheme. Have your say.‼️

Today, we met with the State Examinations Commission (SEC) for a stakeholder consultation to discuss the review of the RACE Scheme (Reasonable Accommodations at Certificate Examinations) held at the Department of Education on Marlborough Street. It was an important session where a broad range of organisations shared insights on the impact, challenges, and necessary changes to the current system.
Now, it’s your turn! The SEC has officially opened a public consultation. Whether you are a student, parent, or teacher, your voice is essential to ensuring every student gets the support they need. The SEC's public consultation is open until May. You can share your opinions either by completing a survey or providing a submission (written, oral or via voicemail).
Help inform this major review and make your voice heard.

A positive step in the right direction. 10 minutes may not seem like a lot but it could be 10 minutes of vital planning time for writing or time for re-reading questions. It is also a benefit that now everyone with a spelling and grammar waiver will be seated in a special centre and receive additional 10 minutes. This is great for students who have dyslexia but didn’t meet the criteria for reading assistance and who need more time for planning, reading and writing.

Extra Time for State Exams Announced by Minister for Education and Youth Following the commitment in the Programme for Government, the State Examinations.

Tonight’s Prime Time on RTE is worth watching if you missed it to get an insight into the benefits of reading schools and reading classes which are designed to teach dyslexic students the way they learn. Our mainstream education system is not designed for dyslexic people. It’s time for major change to allow the 10% of students who have dyslexia to learn in a way that suits them.

When her son was diagnosed with dyslexia four years ago, sports presenter Marie Crowe found herself navigating a system she knew little about.

Well done to Dyslexia Ireland and all who have campaigned for so long to bring this issue to the fore. It will be so interesting to see the criteria that the SEC set out and who will be eligible to apply. Will any student with a dyslexia diagnosis be eligible? Will it be related to very specific criteria such as reading speed that can be measured? Will it level the playing field for students who struggle with processing speed and working memory difficulties? We have to wait and see…
