AlterNATIVE Education Our inspiration comes from two deeply interrelated facts.

AlterNATIVE Education began in a spring 2013 Columbia University class, “Contemporary Approaches to Native American Education.” It was in this class as we learned about the status of education in our own communities that we decided we had to stop lamenting about statistics and do something. There is a severe lack of Native Americans in higher education; Native American high school students have only a 50% high school graduation rate (compared to the national average, 86%) and only 11% pursue and complete a college degree. Second, there is a dearth of dialogue and education surrounding Native American histories, sovereignties, and possibilities in high school classrooms (Native American classrooms, yes, but also classrooms all over the country).
