Restrict screen time for kids. Introduce more of age appropriate books with pictorial representations. Read books to them. In this video, a book was used to teach a child about some animals. It sticks better.

*****Healthy eating prevents childhood obesity****
Childhood obesity is when a child acquires too much body fat for that age. While overweight or underweight is a weight that is outside what is considered a healthy weight for that age. A child is said to be overweight if the BMI is between 85th and 95th percentile. While a child is said to be obese if their body mass index (BMI) is at the 95th percentile or higher.
Dealing with childhood obesity means reducing the possibility of struggling with adulthood obesity. As parents and guardians, we are encouraged to model healthy dietary habits for our children. Children who are obese may be susceptible to a wide range of health problems in adulthood.

Obesity can be caused by unhealthy eating habits, inadequate portion control, low nutrition school snacks, excessive intake of sugary drinks, take-away foods, inadequate physical activity. Although, some causes may be beyond our control such as a slow metabolic rate, genetic dispositions, hormonal problems, and some certain medications. However, it is important to seek the doctor’s advice.

A good remedy to curb childhood obesity is to encourage physical activities for children such as swimming, cycling, childhood gymnastics, football and encouraging children to participate in sports that are childhood friendly.
Parents and guardian encourage healthy eating habits by:
Make meal-times family time, without distractions such as cartoons and movies or games.
Be creative in cutting fruits and vegetables into interesting shapes (I remember growing up we loved eating biscuits shaped like cars and other interesting shapes). Use creative plates and cutleries that can attract kids to eat.
Most times, give fruits as school snacks rather than chocolates. Give chocolates, sweets, lollies, and candies sparingly.
Offer water more than you offer soft drinks.
If there are concerns with your child’s weight and diet, consult a nutritionist or a dietician and a doctor.

Parents be intentional!

For those who love taking supplements at random******

It is dangerous to take supplements especially in the form of tablets without the doctor's prescription. This can lead to electrolyte imbalances and the disruption of the body's PH. The question you should ask yourself is am I actually lacking a particular element in my body??? That is why it is important to have regular medical checks. For instance, if you are deficient in iron or vitamin D, a blood test will detect it and the doctor can prescribe supplements for you in the right amount and dosage.

Another instance,
if you keep taking supplements without the doctor's prescription when you have normal levels of magnesium or potassium or sodium for instance, you may end up dysregulating the levels of magnesium or potassium or sodium in your body.

Another instance,
Let's say you actually have low levels of vitamin D for instance, and you take a supplement without the doctor's prescription. When the body regains to the normal levels, it will end up disrupting your vitamin D levels because you can't even tell that the body has regained.

Therefore, it is important to seek the doctor's advice before taking any supplement. If the doctor prescribes and tells you to stop, take heed. And before you stop, it is important to do a test so that you are certain that the levels have improved.

Please leave your thoughts, oppositions, opinions and agreements. We learn together!

*MYTHS AROUND HEMORRHOIDS (PILE)*

Only adults suffer from hemorrhoids; this a myth and of course children can suffer from hemorrhoids too. Normally every human has veins and blood vessels around the re**um and a**l ca**l. When hemorrhoids occur, these veins and blood vessels around the re**um and a**l ca**l become swollen and inflamed and most times protrude through the a**s. That is it is possible to have both internal and external hemorrhoids at the same time or one of each at a time. They can become really painful if the blood inside them clots.

What to look out for in children..........As these may be a sign or symptom.
As care givers/ parents, it is important to supervise children when they are in the toilet.
Do they bleed whenever they are having bowel movements? Seek medical help.
Is there a lump around the a**s? seek medical help
Do they have a feeling that their bowels is not completely emptied even after sitting on the potty or toilet after a long time? seek medical help
Itchy or sore skin around the a**s? seek medical help
Pain after defecating? seek medical help
***Most importantly seeking medical help will enable medical examination and even if it was a false alarm, it is never a waste of resources.

In children what can trigger hemorrhoids (pile)

Piles/hemorrhoids may be caused by persistent constipation therefore, ensure kids take at least one fruit a day, foods rich in fibre and ensure they drink at least a litre of water a day to avoid dehydration as well as constipation.

Piles in children may be caused by persistent diarhoea. As care givers/parents/guardian, watch what they eat and ensure they wash their hands after playing and visiting the toilet. It is never too early to teach kids hand and food hygiene.

What to teach children........
Teach the little ones not to strain when pooing. Such as 'don't push hard.....Take your time'. Remember to teach in the the language they understand. Make it simple.

When we use baby wipes, we don't rub too hard. If a child becomes very soiled, think of giving a warm bath instead of giving endless wipes.

****Please, leave your questions in the comments section.
How has this topic informed you?
Your thoughts around hemorrhoids are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks.

*When babies start crawling, is a time to think of crawling safety*

Crawling is a key developmental milestone in infancy. You may ask,"why babies put everything in their mouths? This is because babies will usually investigate things with their mouths and this is a major sign of their development as well. So, don't be worried! Putting things in their mouth allows them to discover the taste and texture of various objects. However, mouthing things can also be a sign of toothing. In whichever way, I am only trying to say it's a normal phenomenon for babies. Also, when a baby crawls expect that they will mouth things, lick floors, put footwears in their mouths, and the list is endless. They can also hit things, or get hit by things.

*********************************************************************
So how then are you prepared as a parent or caregiver? Have you decongested the sitting room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen and other common areas? Have you elevated footwears by keeping them out of reach in hanging racks? Have you removed obstacles that they may come in contact with as they crawl? Have you locked up the bathrooms so that they can't find their way into the toilet bowls or put things they may find in the toilet into their mouths? We need to make our living areas baby friendly at all times, such as hanging up handbags that may cause suffocation and may lead to death. It is not a crime to leave information such as "leave your shoes outside, crawling baby" at the major entrance to your house " lol. The importance of these precautionary measures cannot be overemphasized.

*********************************************************************
What of the floors? Do you wash/clean/mop the floors daily? When a baby is crawling, it is advisable and healthier to wash and disinfect floors every day. For instance, you can mop the floors when the baby is in bed at night. You don't need to use a very active disinfectant and cleaning products. You could use a dishwashing liquid and drops of Dettol. It is very important to do this, to avoid the spread of germs from the floors to the baby's mouth. And bear in mind that, this can make babies susceptible to bacteria, fungi, and even viral infections. Do you know, that just as we sterilize their feeding bottles, we can also sterilize/wash/clean their toys? In addition, washing their hands regularly and changing their clothes on a daily basis can also help improve a baby's health and well- being.

*******************************************************************
Let us endeavour to treat babies as humans too. I am saying this because I once heard someone say "just leave him, he is only a baby, he will be fine". Don't forget for infants, their immune system is still in the process of building up. So why let them battle infections or diseases when we can take precautionary actions?

N.B: As a parent/ caregiver, you may be very watchful but what happens when you blink your eyes for a second?

According to the American Academy of pediatrics, babies within 6 months of age should sleep in the same bedroom as their parents. The reason is to minimize the risks of sleep related deaths or what is medically known as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
In view of this, the safest spot for an infant to sleep is in the parent's room and on a firm surface such as a crib, a bassinet or a baby's court and not on the same bed with parents. This should be without bumpers, pillows or toys. This is to prevent suffocation. Ideally infants should sleep in their parents room at night for a full year. So we can say this is from infancy to the inception of childhood (0-1yr). After a year you can relocate them to their rooms. Remember this is for the safety of the child.
😊😊😊Never mind about meeting your partner while the child is in the room and awake. After all, from infancy to the inception of early childhood the brain is still developing.
...................................................................................
Also, variety of deaths can occur when babies sleep on their stomach. According to Dr. Fern Hauck, a pediatric researcher at the university of Virginia, explained that an accurate way is placing infants on their back for every sleep or nap. This is to allow open flow of air to the baby and prevent obstruction of airways. If all is not well with the child and he or she begins to cry, you as a parent or caregiver can clearly hear the sound of the baby's cry when the baby is laid on the back. When a baby lies on his stomach the crying sounds can be suppressed due to the lying position making it difficult to hear a child from afar.
...............................................
Educate everyone about this because safety is the best measure to take.

Best regards
