Utsusemi Aikikai provides martial arts instruction in traditional post-war Aikido. Aikido, "the way of harmony," is a modern Japanese martial art with deep roots in Samurai tradition. You will recognize that many this echos many of the things I say and show in class.

Spectacular Daito-ryu Aiki Budo Demonstration with Katsuyuki Kondo (1995) 15/06/2025

This video is a compilation of O Sensei demonstrating Ikyo at various points in his life from 1935 into the 1960s:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JTj-64CyXc
Please study this. I would ask you to notice several details: 1) he blends with the energy of the attack and uses it to unbalance Uke, 2) he often yields, even with a backwards tendon, to draw Uke off balance, 3) he moves around their strength, 4) he moves alot, 5) he never stops the motion, the energy from one movement leads into the other, 6) the generation of centrifugal force, 7) notice the circular nature of his movement in relation to Uke, and 8) that he never uses blade hand on the elbow.

It is a curious thing that some in Aikido use the blade or knife hand on the elbow, when it is so prone to slip off, and is not found in O Sensei's Aikido. Some have tried to claim this is a remnant of prewar Daito Ryu (which O Sensei had studied). But we have videos of Daito Ryu now that show this is not the case in that art either: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGEV_T4hCBg

My best guess at trying to explain the use of knife blade in Ikyo in Aikido is that some still photos of O Sensei demonstrating atemi strikes to the face or elbow were misinterpreted by people trying to learn Aikido from books (before video was widely available). Then it got passed down in a minority of styles.
