Reading: a painful joy

There was a present absence even though we were always alone together. No communication was a bittersweet comfortable misery with an awful good cheerful pessimist. There was a deafening silence that a simple phone card could remedy. All the beggarly riches could not wipe away the cruel kindness surrounding this impossible situation.
Being no spendthrift, my husband procrastinated getting me a basic cell phone for emergencies. One day he came home and found me in ill health from a fall. A sad smile appeared on his face as he realized his only choice was to get me a cell phone!
