On Sunday, 10th May 2026, UNIMAWES hosted a wonderful Finale Dinner at Domino Gardens, Zomba; a memorable send-off party for our final-year students.

The event was spiced up by Mr. Hope Mezuwa, Co-Founder of Max and Sherry Dine and Lodge, who spoke about how identifying a problem and developing a systematic way of addressing it can create impact in both community and business settings. He also emphasized the importance of branding and unique service delivery.

Another guest speaker, Misheck Banda, MEAL Manager at Waste Advisors, spoke about how waste management can be monetized. He shared examples of people who are earning a living through waste monetization, demonstrating how waste management and recycling can create sustainable income opportunities. His talk encouraged the finales and everyone present to keep an open mind and find ways to survive and thrive in today’s era of job scarcity.

For UNIMAWES, the farewell was more than just a dinner. It was a session of entrepreneurship, networking, and inspiration.

Today, 1 May 2026, UNIMAWES proudly participated in the launch of the Ukhondo Ndi Udingo Wanga initiative in Zomba, organized by the Zomba City Council.

The event began with a city clean-up exercise, bringing together students, community members, and various stakeholders. As a society, we were honored to contribute to this activity, reinforcing our mission of promoting environmental awareness.

The launch was graced by the Mayor of Zomba City Council and the Guest of Honour, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri MP, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, highlighting the importance of collective action in achieving cleaner communities. Our participation reflects the role of young people as drivers of change.

Let us all remember: Ukhondo ndi udindo wanga.

UNIMAWES SPOTLIGHT MONDAY

Today, we celebrate Ms. Atupele Kanyika, a dedicated member of UNIMAWES. She is the current UNIMAWES president and a former 3rd-year representative.

We celebrate her because despite the world facing challenges in gender equality and bias, she decided to make a difference in environmental conservation through her role as president.

Her passion inspires many girls to contribute to environmental conservation. Keep shining and encouraging others to make a difference! 🌳

On Sunday, 12 April 2026, UNIMAWES held a handover ceremony marking the transition of leadership from the outgoing executive to the incoming executive.

This important event outlined the society’s core goals in advancing environmental and wildlife sustainability. During the ceremony, the outgoing executive shared how each department operates and highlighted key challenges they faced.

This year’s elections also marked a significant milestone, as the society elected a female president; reinforcing UNIMAWES’ commitment to promoting gender equality and inclusivity in environmental leadership.

Day 3 Highlights: Environmental Awareness Week 💚

On Wednesday, 26th February 2026, the UNIMA Wildlife and Environmental Society (UNIMAWES), in collaboration with AVORE Technologies, conducted an activity to promote environmentally friendly packaging on campus. AVORE Technologies, a Malawian company that produces biodegradable food packaging from cassava starch, supported the initiative by providing kraft paper packaging as an alternative to thin plastics. This activity was part of the society’s ongoing campaign to promote a complete reduction and eventual elimination of thin plastics on campus.

During the activity, cooked-food vendors on campus were each given 10 small and 10 large kraft paper packages as part of a testing phase. The purpose of this phase was to assess how well the alternative packaging would be accepted by both vendors and customers. UNIMAWES also expressed its intention to become a distributor of the kraft papers on campus in order to make procurement easier and more convenient for vendors.

The activity attracted considerable attention and support. It was attended by the university marketing team and covered by several media organizations, including the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Times 360, and National Publications Limited, all of whom showed strong interest in documenting and publicizing the environmental efforts being undertaken by the society.

Overall, the activity demonstrated UNIMAWES’s commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices and encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives on campus.

Day 5 Highlights: Environmental Awareness Week💚

On Friday, 27th February 2026, the week-long Environmental Awareness Week came to an end. The event was organized by the UNIMA Wildlife and Environmental Society (UNIMAWES) in collaboration with other student societies on campus. This year’s Environmental Awareness Week was conducted under the theme: No Thin Plastics on Campus – Keep UNIMA Clean and Green, which aimed to promote a clean and environmentally friendly campus.

As part of the closing activities, UNIMAWES organized a campus-wide exercise to collect thin plastics, commonly known as kantolotole in Chichewa. The activity symbolized the commitment and determination of members to eliminate thin plastics from the campus. Participants collected all visible plastic waste to demonstrate the society’s vision of a clean and green university environment.

The activity was warmly received by the university administration, the city council, students, and campus vendors. One vendor expressed her commitment to stopping the use of thin plastics but explained that accessing alternative packaging materials is difficult and time-consuming because there are no nearby suppliers. She indicated that she plans to adopt kraft paper as an alternative packaging material and would need about two full boxes each week. However, the only suppliers she knows are located in Blantyre, Ndirande, which requires a long trip.

In response, the President of UNIMAWES, Robert Kamwendo, assured her that UNIMAWES would collaborate with AVORE Technologies to help distribute alternative packaging materials on campus and make them easier to access.

Overall, the Environmental Awareness Week demonstrated that unity and commitment can help create a cleaner and healthier environment. It also showed that students have an important role to play in environmental conservation and in building a better future.

Day 4 Highlights: Environmental Awareness Week💚

On 26th February 2026, the UNIMA Wildlife and Environmental Society carried out a planned activity to clean up the Chikanda big bin area. The activity started at exactly 11:00 a.m. This bin has been one of the dirtiest places in Chikanda and poses a significant threat to the health of students and local residents. In particular, waste often spills into the nearby river, which many local people use for washing clothes and other household purposes.

It was also noted that some local residents and hostel owners dump their waste beside the bin instead of throwing it directly into the bin, causing the surrounding area to be covered with garbage. It was very unfortunate to see that even baby diapers were thrown there, which presents a serious health hazard.

As a society that advocates for environmental conservation, we are also concerned about human health. This activity was carried out in collaboration with the SRC Director of Environment and the Male Gender Attaché. UNIMAWES members volunteered as usual to demonstrate that through unity, everything is possible. However, due to limited manpower and equipment, the society was unable to complete the work. Nevertheless, the activity sent a strong message to the city council that it is time to take waste management in Chikanda seriously.

The following day, the city council sent workers to complete the work that UNIMAWES had started. During the activity, UNIMAWES members also agreed to organize an awareness week aimed at local residents to promote greater seriousness in environmental conservation.
