A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication

With a $1.8M U.S. Dept. of Educ. grant, K-State is helping K-12 educators improve their instruction of American history and civics through the use of founding documents like the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights.

The 'Educating for the Republic' program—presented by K-State's Department of Political Science, A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication and College of Education—aims to help more than 45,000 Kansas students better understand America's founding principles, texts and civic practices.

The grant covers educators' four-day seminar fee and other expenses. Eight more seminars will be offered over the next two summers in various sites across the state. Participants receive professional development credits.

Last month a group of K-State students immersed themselves in an authentic photojournalism experience, where they adapted to changing conditions, interviewed local experts and documented the beauty and diversity of Alaska while building career-ready skills.

The K-State Digital Summit team has been awarded the Kansas State University 2026 Excellence in Engagement Award, recognizing impactful and reciprocal community engagement. Congratulations to this interdisciplinary initiative, which has been working since 2023 to expand access to digital skills and digital career pathways for high school students across the state of Kansas!

We're still thinking about Dr. Natalie Pennington's (from Colorado State University) impactful talk about social media's impact on friendships at last week's K-State Social Media Week event. One student commented that they found the event "very insightful and validating, especially how it reflected the ways social media has taken over friendships in my generation. While there are parts of social media that are not perfect, Dr. Pennington highlighted many positive impacts and helped me better appreciate the role social media can play."
