The University honored President Johnson's Ambassador to Australia during the difficult Vietnam War years by giving his name to the Center.
The Clark Center was created during Australia's 1988 Bicentenary to make ties between UT-Austin and Australia (which dated back to the World War II period) more concrete. A decade later, New Zealand Studies were added to the Center's program.

This week, Clark Center Director Dr. Rhonda Evans moderated a panel at Australia House at SXSW about Australian cafés in the United States.
Over the past two decades, Australian-style cafés have quietly reshaped coffee and brunch culture in cities across the U.S.—combining serious espresso, inventive all-day brunch menus, and a distinctive approach to hospitality.
Grateful to the American Australian Association for partnering on Australia House at SXSW to make conversations like this possible, and thanks to Laura L. and her team for organizing, and the panelists—Lindsay Goodrich, Alicia Ritson, and Andrew Stone for participating.
