British word of the week 🇬🇧
Part 88

This week's British word of the week is "to neck something", a Brit would usually say "neck it!"

This phrasal verb means to drunk something, particularly alcohol, very quickly. 🍻🥤

So if you're at a party and a British person tells you to "neck" your drink! That means you have to drink it fast!

A useful phrase to use to sound like a real Brit!🇬🇧

This word is a great example of how difficult (and annoying) English pronunciation can be.

The reason that English pronunciation can be very difficult, is because a lot of the time, we don't write the words how we pronounce them.

dough - d-oh (rhymes with toe or go)

Do you have problems with the pronunciation of any other words?? Comment below!

So yesterday was Pancake Day in the UK🥞🇬🇧

But what the hell is pancake day and why do we celebrate by eating pancakes??

Pancake day is actually called Shrove Tuesday and it is the last day before Lent

Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter, when Christians traditionally commemorate (remember an important event or person) and reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus and his resurrection at Easter.

They do this by fasting (not eating or drinking for a period of time) and to help them fast they would remove all the tempting foods in the house.

A good way to do this??

MAKING PANCAKES!!

and the tradition stuck!

We usually eat sweet pancakes with fillings like ice cream, chocolate spread and fruits !🍒🍋

Comment below what you would have on your pancakes !!

Trekking VS hiking!! 🥾⛰️🚶🏻‍♀️

So both are nouns (or present participles if we have our grammar hats on)

But what's the difference??

Trekking involves longer distances and you usually trek for a few days so need to sleep in a tent or other type of shelter.

Hiking is shorter in terms of distance and you don't (usually) sleep anywhere!

Do you like trekking or hiking??
