Success is rarely a straight path. For John Efraim Graban, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Class of 2022, every challenge became a stepping stone toward achieving his dream.
John's college journey began long before he became a Golden Paddler. In 2017, he was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at a private school. However, financial hardships forced him to stop his studies when continuing to pay tuition was no longer possible.
Determined not to give up on his education, he enrolled at Caraga State University Cabadbaran Campus (CarSUCC) as a third-year irregular student. But another challenge awaited him. With the implementation of the new curriculum, he was informed that he could no longer continue as a third-year student and had to return to the first year.
For many, it would have been a reason to walk away. For John, it became another reason to keep moving forward.
Starting over was never easy. As an irregular student, he had to navigate a longer and more demanding academic journey. The challenges did not end there. During his thesis, countless revisions and setbacks forced his group to begin again from scratch. There were moments when graduation seemed impossible. Yet with perseverance, teamwork, and the guidance of his instructors, John and his group pushed through every obstacle until they finally crossed the finish line.
In 2022, he proudly earned his Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management degree, a testament to the resilience that had defined his journey from the very beginning.
Graduation was not the end of his story but the beginning of a bigger dream. John aspired to work aboard an international cruise ship, but the road to getting there required patience and persistence. While waiting for his opportunity, he worked as a waiter in Butuan City and simultaneously underwent training to prepare for the cruise industry. It took him nearly a year before his long-awaited opportunity finally arrived.
Today, John serves as a Seafarer with Royal Caribbean International, currently based in Florida, USA, where he proudly represents Filipino hospitality and the quality of education nurtured at CarSUCC on the global stage.
Looking back, John describes his journey as one filled with sacrifices and lessons. While working on a cruise ship offers opportunities to build a better future, it also demands resilience, discipline, and emotional strength. Being away from family and loved ones for extended periods is one of the greatest challenges of the profession, reminding him that success often comes with sacrifices that are not immediately visible.
His story is a powerful reminder that the journey to success is not defined by how many times life asks us to start over, but by the courage to keep moving forward despite every setback.
From restarting college to sailing across the world's oceans, John Efraim Graban has proven that determination can turn adversity into achievement. His journey continues to inspire every Golden Paddler to believe that no dream is too distant for those who are willing to persevere.
